LOYALTY INCENTIVE: BULL-MAN TITAN

We are delighted to announce that the survey link for June has been dispatched to those who are eligible for this Loyalty Incentivce! This month, we are thrilled to introduce a new addition to our collection: the Bull-man Titan, also known as the Bull of Heaven, from the Epic of Gilgamesh.

In ancient Mesopotamian mythology, the Bull of Heaven is a legendary creature engaged in a fierce battle with the heroic figure Gilgamesh. The tale of the Bull of Heaven has two versions, one documented in an earlier Sumerian poem and a later rendition in the standard Akkadian Epic of Gilgamesh. In the Sumerian account, the goddess Inanna dispatches the Bull to attack Gilgamesh for unclear reasons.

A more comprehensive narrative is found in Tablet VI of the Epic of Gilgamesh, wherein Gilgamesh rejects the advances of the goddess Ishtar, equivalent to Inanna in East Semitic mythology. This infuriates Ishtar, prompting her to pray her father Anu for the Bull of Heaven, which she intends to deploy against Gilgamesh in Uruk. Anu grants her request, and the Bull is sent forth to confront Gilgamesh and his loyal companion, the hero Enkidu, who join forces to slay the mighty creature.

Following the triumph over the Bull, Enkidu boldly casts the Bull's right thigh towards Ishtar, mocking her with his action. Unfortunately, this act leads to the gods condemning Enkidu to a tragic fate, igniting Gilgamesh's profound dread of his own mortality, which drives the subsequent segments of the epic. The Bull was also associated with the constellation Taurus, and the tale of its defeat likely held astronomical significance for the ancient Mesopotamians. Some elements of this story bear similarities to later legends from the ancient Near East, including narratives from Ugarit, the account of Joseph in the Book of Genesis, and certain episodes from the revered Greek epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey.
