February's Third Map Preview - Gruffod's Fort
Added 2024-01-18 22:00:05 +0000 UTCHey!
There were some brilliant ideas in last month's Third Map poll, (or was it the month before?)- either way we decided to revisit the list and make another one for the forthcoming Third Map.
Something that has been requested lots, and was highly placed in the poll, was a frontier palisade fort - a chance for adventurers to rest in safety, or learn the latest rumours before heading out.
So, here's Gruffod's Fort, a 60x60 map of such a place!

As an enthusiast of sieges in fantasy RPGs, one of the best features of this map is that it doesn't end two inches from the edges of the structure. There's room to have enemies surround the fortification, or have infiltrators try to get in without being spotted from the towers. But to that end, no one would construct a fortification and leave that much uncleared territory around it in the real world. In some fantasy settings, I suppose that the builder of the fortification might not do so, out of concern for angering the local druids, fey, or beast-lord/plant-lord. And I admit that the map is more attractive for having the greenery & ground cover.

While a caravanserai is likely better suited for a "sandy" middle-eastern flavoured map, one set in a rocky/scrub area works well, too.

I am sure many GMs have a similar location in their campaigns, or would love to include one. I presume the actual layout isn't copyrighted, and you could always call it 'Castle on the Frontier'?
