Holy Headphone Hair, Batman!

So, I've been swamped this week and as a result (despite Monday content and a new podcast episode tomorrow) I couldn't upload my normal Thursday YT content today - Feeling awfully guilty, I still wanted to swing by and chat to the Patreon family. So this is my "Thursday Thoughts", a new segment perhaps... Enjoy!

Comments

Thanks for this new segment, love your sharing! Also don't stress about missing an episode or two, you've given us so much content already, you totally deserve to take a break (or two) once in a while!

I think using just one reference is fine! I like to test the same song on a new speaker set-up, what’s the difference? And your mixes are CLEAN SUPREME! No particular question from John, just a “what’s your thoughts on it all?” A good general think piece! I hear you on your AI reasoning, Lalal and such. Do you think your opinion would change if Ableton had stem seperate on built in? Over n’ out, boss!

Ah man, mixing is HARD! But.. for me it starts to become somewhat of a very shallow "muscle memory". Since I still don't even have anything remotely close to a studio I rely only on my ears in my headphones and some visual aid (Izotope tonal balance for instance). But lately I've realised that just by ear, I come pretty close to my same old reference track over and over again, I mean before even checking the visuals. So I guess one is not too old to still learn right? :D And. yes, that is true, I use almost ONE single reference track for all my tracks haha.. I mean when it's untZ-untZ-untZ! I LOVE manipulating loops. Cutting, reversing, building new rhythms and stuff like that (buuut it's usually just hihats, percs and maybe breaks). I also use XO quite a lot to create my own loops, and then I start chopping them as well hehe, but nothing ever from Splice or LoopCloud. SampleMarket or Undrgrnd Sounds are my best shops at this moment.. ;) But I guess it doesn't matter really, no one can ever tell if you've used a loop or not right? Hmm, AI. I don't know man, it feels kinda dodgy to me so far. Like, the image generators have already taken over lots of space where you before actually had to put some work into your creations. ALL cover art for new releases I see all over Discord are probably generated these days. And it's all just meh. That's why I decided to NEVER use a generator for any art moving forward. And it's quite refreshing. I mean for the track I actually managed to release today I had my friend take a photo of me, holy hell! That was quite a minute ago I asked someone to do that.. :D And regarding AI and music, I really don't know. Suno and Udio are obviously just copying other peoples songs. Ok, and then we have that giant law suit, let's see where that takes us. The outcome will probably be that Sony, Universal and Warner manages to stop any other service from "analysing" and learning from their giant catalogues. But since this is about money, they'll find a way to create their own similar AI-tools and viola, yet another source of income. Also, I believe Spotify will be next as soon as they figure out a way to secretly promote their own playlists with endless streams of Spotify-generated AI-tracks similar to all other music ever made EVER. Why pay artists per stream, when you can pay yourself, for an almost identical service? The mainstream radio-loving non-producer person with just a standard "interest" in music won't tell the difference ait? Win win, win win! Ok, maybe TODAY you could spot the difference between an AI-generated song and a normal one, but give Skynet tops 12 months and I bet you no one can! Ok, I should go to bed but rambling continues. For me when it comes to AI and music making I really love services like LAIAI. These stem separation services are getting standardised by the minute and with Live 13 we'll probably have it stock, as with Logic and FL, which is nice if you wanna remix stuff like myself. As for now I don't have any thoughts about smart EQs or SmartLimiters and all that.. I don't know if they're really smart and AI-driven as these companies tells us, or if they're just based on references. Did John mention anything in particular when he asked you the question about AI? How's your AI-record doing btw? :D As for now I don't feel like I need AI-generated music the least, there are already so many songs out there and tons to sample. The market is oversaturated and with +100k tracks released everyday on Spotify, do we really need bad music created by machines lol? I think I'll pull all my future tracks from Spotify and stay small and BandCampy, hehe. No one except late night diggers on BC will ever find my rare and hard to find work. Maybe that's the future? Instead of everything being so accessible to everyone all the time at once for basically free we need to go back to old times when you had to engage if you wanted to learn about or listen to new music? We have lost the sense of music, the feeling of gratitude for a record, the entire point of it all and I really need to stop writing now. Ok, over and out boss. Love the thursday kitchen-thought-experiement btw, I'll swing by as often as I can! I wish you could leave voice memos here as well haha.. this post took me ages! /Jono <3
