The domino effect actually happened at a library building at the school I worked at. This was the 80s. It's a neighborhood called Manhattanville, around W 130th, 12th Ave, and Broadway. Very run down, auto repair shops, storage places. The neighborhood is gone now, replaced by Columbia's new Manhattanville campus. But there was a building owned by CU that held book storage. If the book was needed, they would send a page there to pick it up, otherwise nobody would be in there. --- One day the shelving collapses, I never heard a speculated reason. But it was a complete domino effect where the last aisle crashed out the window and onto the street several floors below. Luckily nobody was walking under there. (Would not be the case today, that is for sure). There was a photograph in at least one of the NY dailies, but I don't recall if they ran the story or just the photo with a caption. I worked for CU many years, and people you tell these days assume you're making it up. I miss those wacky days.
