Chapter Formatting
Added 2020-06-14 11:20:09 +0000 UTCEDIT
Poll is now closed. Dark auto won (you can click the link below if you want details). However, for anyone who likes light mode, fret not. I found a way to export both light and dark from LibreOffice with a macro (not dark rrl, that would be significantly harder). I also took the opportunity to fix the epub metadata, though this required learning more VB than I would have preferred. C'est la vie. I've attached light, dark, and new epub versions of everything since chapter 100, as well as the export script for those with a high VB tolerance.

Now that we've had a few chapters in dark theme, let's have a vote. Take a look at the three different options, then go here to rank them. I am trying to find the option that works best for the majority of people, which is hard because of all of the different pdf and epub readers floating around out there.
If this link doesn't work, try it a few more times. Rankit seems to have some issue with redirects that breaks things about 1/4 of the time for me.

Also, FPTP sucks.

2020-06-18 12:59:45 +0000 UTCThe way I usually do is I start up Magnify and press Ctrl+Alt+I to invert colors, instructions: 1. Start run command by pressing "Windows Button + R" 2. Type in magnify and press enter 3. Set magnify to 100% and full screen 4. press "ctrl + alt i" to invert colors

2020-06-17 20:51:55 +0000 UTCI usually read the epub version and change the theming as I like, so that doesn't matter to me. But, would it be possible to add a "title" to the epubs? As is, my iBooks is currently full of Unknown Titles which is bearable but less than ideal.

2020-06-17 20:50:22 +0000 UTCI like plain, but in my epub reader the format is overwritten anyway

2020-06-15 17:18:50 +0000 UTCno, that's my pref as well. Of the half dozen I'm currently funding this is the only one that *doesn't* do that.

2020-06-15 16:24:25 +0000 UTCAm I the only one that would prefer plain text in the main Patreon post? That’s how all the other novels I sub to on patreon do it and it’s super easy to read whether I’m on desktop or mobile.
2020-06-15 15:03:23 +0000 UTCit's not hard to not vote is it?

2020-06-14 21:41:05 +0000 UTCI mean both the dark one is completely the same, but I think the one that is not that bright is better for the eyes when your reading in the dark. Another possible way is to not make the background as black.

2020-06-14 21:20:37 +0000 UTCi normally just read it here inline (or on RR)..the d/l actually adds steps for me, although the plus is I get an archive. I prefer std blk-on-white by far.

2020-06-14 19:21:01 +0000 UTCIt might also be good to take a poll of what e-readers people use. I suspect many complaints are coming from folks who are unaware of better alternatives. As an author, it may also be easier to pick a few popular ones and just support those.

2020-06-14 19:07:16 +0000 UTCPlain works best for iBooks, Kindle, and Calibre, as they all support user theming. I have bad eyesight and the last chapter was difficult to read to too lower contrast than I prefer between the text/background.

2020-06-14 16:35:11 +0000 UTCI use readera on android with the epub. So it was already in dark mode, I have noticed sometimes the text overflows the tables though, and the interface at the beginning of the most recent chapter didn't display correctly at all.

2020-06-14 15:37:00 +0000 UTCCouldn’t check ePub I don’t have a reader for that. However the pdf on my tablet works just fine. I couldn’t tell the difference between the darks. However they were far easier to read for me.

2020-06-14 15:22:22 +0000 UTCAs someone reading the epub versions, I chose "plain" and "dark auto", simply because they don't seem to interfere with my reader's settings (I set it to have a sepia theme ; neither black-on-white nor white-on-black). However, the pdf people will probably vote differently, for very different reasons, than the epub people like me.
2020-06-14 15:21:19 +0000 UTCmost epub readers give a lot of options the same for most pdf readers "How to" for adobe reader: https://www.howtogeek.com/258313/how-to-invert-the-colors-in-a-pdf-file-in-adobe-acrobat-reader-for-easier-nighttime-reading/

2020-06-14 14:21:52 +0000 UTCDunno if you can do it, it maybe a format that lets people customize the layout to their preference. Seems like people are too varied on their preferences/needs. A vote would just leave a minority of people unhappy, especially since it’s a pho-dichotomy vote. A more adaptable format would be the more elegant solution.

2020-06-14 14:07:02 +0000 UTCJust not dark_rrl, it looks bad in ePub when you turn it white. I have a vote for a different thing though: chapter number/title and author metadata in the ePub. My reader app is full of Unknown/Unknown with no cover!

2020-06-14 13:55:17 +0000 UTCwhat epub reader are you using? I am using EPUBReader, a firefox addon. It is very adjustable and recomended by firefox. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/epubreader/?src=search adobe reader also gives such option: https://www.howtogeek.com/258313/how-to-invert-the-colors-in-a-pdf-file-in-adobe-acrobat-reader-for-easier-nighttime-reading/

2020-06-14 13:25:34 +0000 UTCif you could make the black background every so slightly brighter that would be nice
2020-06-14 13:20:34 +0000 UTCI was reading the pdf version so far. After last week I wanted to read the epub to have a light background but when I tried it today, the text was all light grey and annoying to read (and my attempts to change it failed) so I went back to the dark pdf. I'd rather have it as it was before though.

2020-06-14 12:39:21 +0000 UTCi am reading the epub version i configured my reader so far that i didn't even notice your experiments, all 3 versions look the same: dark grey background (lighter than your pdf-rrl background) and light grey writing (about the same as your pdf-rrl writing) if i have to evaluate the PDF Best: dark rrl 2 best: dark auto (honestly not much of a difference to dark rrl, just a bit whiter writing) not my preference: plain (i don't realy like white background)

2020-06-14 12:14:43 +0000 UTCDark mode is available almost everywhere. Its easier on the eyes usually and uses less battery.

2020-06-14 12:06:42 +0000 UTCI really don't understand why the dark background. Were the people complaining?
2020-06-14 11:45:47 +0000 UTCI have a strong astigmatism, light text on a dark background is physically painful for me- to the point where reading more than a few hundred words can leave me with a debilitating headache. (A great number of people with astigmatisms have trouble with light text on dark backgrounds- not usually as severe as me, but definitely painful to read. There's a reason it's banned at many academic conferences for slideshows.) There are technical workarounds that can fix the problem for me, but they are a bit of a hassle every time- please, please have the option to have just a plain, light background PDF.
