Three, sir.

Comments

Oh noes. Heroes the town has been taken over by a cult/outlaw gang/orc warparty/gypsy caravan, can you help us? That was my first thought, my second thought was this is going to turn out to be Team Rocket. I suspect that the 'unfucking' of the town as a whole and its units of measure will be a side story with Jamus' family and exploration of this crack to a higher ranked area outside of town under the ground. (We get to Delve for real, not just the system created lairs!) Not because it isn’t important especially to the people that live that but because I don't think it will be a threat to Ascension as a whole. I see five possible scenarios. The most amusing is if Crimson Garr and team anger or assault Tallheart and he tears Garr's arm off and beats him with it as he did with the stumper the first night of rank shift. Next is they use force against towns people in front of them and while Rain hems and haws about using force against them Ameliah, Carten, and Val stop them. They are full threat to Company and it's a major plot thread for a few chapters. Least amusing while they are assholes and hurt Stint, they don’t want the power and are relieved to dump it on Rain and he has to be mayor for a few days to fix the town. Option five: none of the above. I suspect we'll find out that we're looking at four or five adventurers between 10 and 14 with the leader between 16 and 20. Compared to Rain's twenty combat capable awaked of which eleven have been shown to be willing to fight people or have backgrounds that suggest such. Yes several of new awakened but with the 150 to 230 kilometers between Essed and Vestvall probably taking between one and two weeks depending on speed and actual distance, I'd be shocked if any of the combatants hadn’t reached their class selection at level 5. The people who have taken over the inn and scared the townsfolk could definitely hurt, kidnap, or even kill one of Ascension but they aren’t going to win vs the whole company. The question isn't of Ascension’s victory but how much damage they take if they have to fight. From what we learned in chapter 116 the guy that cuckolded Jamus was probably around level 5 and was effectively a king in Vestvall at even that meager level. Vestvall doesn't appear to have a guild branch. They did have a Watch branch with a mindcaster but that was brought to Fel Sadanis and we don’t know if any remained in the Watch outpost or if so if they survived the rank shift; given the assholes in the inn being on top but otherwise letting the town exist in fearful neglect I would wager no Watchers. I think it's safe to stay there wouldn’t be any cream of the crop adventurers in Vestvall to begin with. Stints scared of them but how strong are they actually? And if they were really high into bronze why would they be interested in staying in Vestvall? I wager they are merely bullies playing big fish in little pond and aren’t more than a side quest for Ascension. My questions going forward are how are Jamus' kids, what needs to happen to help them, how deep does the crack go, and is Rain going to build Vestvall a new wall before he leaves or (smarter idea) if the rank zone ends somewhere near by with in a couple day's travel will he help them move the town? If moving settlements sounds strange that’s fair but it happened with frequency after natural disasters in the pre modern era. The original plan was evacuation of Vestvall but with 75% of the town remaining without a hard figure it might be too many to take to a safe city but they might be able to move them to rebuild instead. I look forward to being proved wrong in the next episode of As the Rain Turns. Of which I looking forward to if you couldn’t tell, I spent too long typing this.

Lettered Wolf

Burrill is still goldplate. Or at least was when he left the rousers.

MatrixM

If he gets a skill point accolade he can stray from the build plan. That'll let him make a great leap forward in effective power w/o waiting till silver and w/o getting his build to the point where it's truly OP.

MRob

Kinda, he can't get back into soul space reliably yet. He also can't sense mana outside of his body, so with the exception of say, healing word he can't sense the mana to copy it. My theory is that is the real Platinum break through and why the ancients only treated Plats as full guild members. Once you can learn skills without skill points / increase your souls core with time and training as opposed to hunting monsters there is no upper cap for your power and you get to join the big boy table.

wanderer117

Re Adam Roundfield Booooooo Boo. Boo I say.

wanderer117

No he has his build almost completely planned out though?

MatrixM

My personal guess/hope is that we'll get a halfway-levelup where rain gets a generic skill acolade and takes Ethereal Aura

Christopher Roberts

Nope, instead were in a Rain trapped in the boonies place. 🤣 enjoy!

Orion Dye

The interesting thing here is that Rain noted his macros work at soul speed. So this is theoretically possible if he spends a few days in soul space observing a particular skill's mana movements. There was even a bit at the beginning of the story where he theorized modifying his skills will eventually be within his power due to the system 'wall' preventing it not being an impossible one to break through.

Starless

Weeeelll you KNOW he is gonna dawdle in a state of indecision for the better part of the next decade about what skills to pick and such no matter what so even if he gets to 25 'early' sometime next year the story isn't gonna change much for a long time anyways

tibbish

Does he even need to be level 25? If Rain does the same as Meloni and tries to learn skills hard way and with the methods of Ameliah he could learn every possible skill. No need for levels :-D

Umut Numanoglu

Another good one. Tallheart quickly controlled his expression, his face fading back to impassivity. “I cannot say that I have ever received a reaction quite like that before.” He tilted his head. “I do not make a habit of visiting human cities, however.”

SenescentSoul

I nominate this for the inane comment award.

Adam Roundfield

I heard level 25 is scheduled for 2025.

Adam Roundfield

I also meant to recommend another edit and blanked it. Tallheart says, “I cannot say that I have ever received a reaction quite like that before, not that I make a habit of entering human cities.” This isn't as cut and dry an edit as making sure a name isn't repeated too often. But you seem to make sure your characters speak in distinctive ways. And I would assume Tallheart would say that in two sentences, not one, with the way you typically write him.

Ziggy

I agree that that is a very strange way to actually feel but isn’t a very strange thing to say given the circumstances. In this case James has elevated levels of anxiety about his family so he thinks that these two scenarios (them being dead and them not recognizing him) are equivalent however if the first were to occur then I dare say that he would wish for the second to have occurred instead.

Hajakuja

Mmm. Good suggestion. Done.

SenescentSoul

oh god that'll be so long lol

Eric Hartz

They're Bronze rankers so it won't work. It'd have to be someone in the Silver ranks to have a chance at breaking lvl25. I'm also pretty sure (but still guessing) breaking lvl25+ is going to be a major event that the author is saving up for. Given the rate things are going currently maaaaaaaaaaybe sometime in the middle or late next year? We'll see.

tibbish

Aah. Makes sense. Thanks!

Eric Hartz

I don't think you can, unless it's within a day or so of killing a blue. Otherwise it wouldn't have been such a big deal when Val was found in the dungeon.

The Random NPC

If people can get levels from taking out Adventurers, I wonder if fixing the town of their BBEG problem will be what gets Rain over the 25 cap

Eric Hartz

"Four years since he’d last received a letter from Bens." Apparently he even tried keeping contact with his oldest, the one that would actually remember him. Not like he just "dropped" them like you say. He was literally cuckolded to where they weren't even his kids, and like any emotionally developed human, he loved the kids he raised for over a decade. Him not being able to stay because of what happened doesn't mean he loves them less. Anymore than a father that gets divorced in current day and has to move away.

Ziggy

Minor edit recommendation. “I can handle this, Rain, if you want to follow them.” She inserts "Rain" into a comment just a passage or two before this statement. That one lends her statement proper emphasis and fits. Her doing so again in this passage right after is instead repetitive. Recommend removing the "Rain" in this quote and keeping it in the statement she says prior.

Ziggy

Thank you for this timeskip. I appreciate so much that we're not in another Rain trapped underground pace.

Osiris

Unbelievable? I dunno about that. I'm certainly liking Jamus's story so far. Leaving town at a time when retaliation would be tantamount to suicide, only to return ten years later as a powerful wizard ready to get your family back. Its got that 'how do you like me now' energy going on. I imagine this kind of reprisal will be more common as the newly awakened air their past grievances.

Starless

Also they didn't test animals in party on delve yet.

reji

This whole Jamus situation just unbelievable. He **dropped** his family, stop mailing them few YEARS ago and now he running to know they dead or not. And his son like "hey, daddy, I happy to see you! Thanks for abandoning us!" Author just doesn't have enough life and writing experience, but we here for action and popcorn, so it's fair, I think.

reji

I think you're forgetting he left because he found out that none of his children were his, and his wife had been cheating on him with a rich influential guy in town for at least 10 years, and that he couldn't even call the guy on it because of the power imbalance between them. He also refused to continue to be screwed over by his wife and that guy. He considers them his kids and loves them because he raised them their whole lives, but it's not they aren't actually his, technically. Also he left them with his wife, who had left him for rich guy (whose kids they *actually* were anyway). They were certainly left in comfortable circumstances. So I think your massive emphasis on him leaving them "voluntarily" is completely unreasonable and intentionally twists the situation to try to paint it like Jamus is some bad person for leaving his kids, while ignoring the entire *actual* context of what really happened. Trying to paint him as the one who's the bad guy for this is utterly ridiculous.

Kyle

I so want more then one a week. These povs from someone normal interacting with rains sphere of influence are nice.

Valter Anunciação

Thank you!

Andrew

I believe Rain actually asked that question to himself at one point. He can't really justify giving up one of the company not awakening to test. But if they ever have a free slot for awakening and not enough members, I'm sure he'll want to try it lol.

Ziggy

I hope Dust can get levels, that would be hilarious.

Pyrefiend

^This.

Tim

fuss fixed, thanks. Doubtless/doubtlessly is one of those pesky style things that can go either way. I like doubtless.

SenescentSoul

This guy gets it

SenescentSoul

Sociopaths don't get 'hurt' emotionally, so your argument its nonsensical.

Chopper

You must've somehow missed the chapter it happened, and then missed any reference to them being close since then. I've had a similar moment of somehow completely missing something specific in a story. Always makes you feel real dumb or senile but we all do it lol.

Ziggy

best character dust is back heheh

GrayReader

in a chapter ages ago they kinda just casually hooked up, i think its been mentioned a few times before

GrayReader

Yeah he left because the alternative was shit. He didn't want to leave, but not like he could do much with what happened with his wife. And again, he doesn't say he wouldn't care if they were dead. Like any normal person, both options would hurt. Whether they're dead or forgot him. Pretty normal. Not sociopathic.

Ziggy

They got together right before the biodome

Yeno Memevig

Did I totally miss Meloni and Jamus being a thing until now or is this the first we are hearing about it?

Kapelteta

I vaguely remember something about the wife getting up to some stuff that made James have to choose between putting his family thru a big scandal or leaving.

Kapelteta

That's a shit analogy, mate. They're not forgetting him because of an incurable disease, they're forgetting him because he VOLUNTARILY left for 10 years. And if the alternative is them being dead, then I don't see how any non-sociopath would equate the two scenarios.

viewless

australian, id wager

Pedro Villa

That's a really odd viewpoint. Let's say you have a father that has been going senile. You go to visit him and think about how you're not sure whether finding out they've died or have completely forgotten you would be more painful. This doesn't make you a sociopath. This makes you a human that would be hurt by both outcomes, you're just not sure which would suck more. Just like Jamus. None of the definitions of sociopath would have Jamus being a sociopath for this.

Ziggy

If there is the slightest possibility that your hurt feelings from your family not remembering you is anywhere comparable to the emotional trauma of knowing that they were slaughtered by monsters, then there's something deeply wrong with you.

viewless

How's that sociopathic?

Elmhedera

Typos: Would I be making this much fuss if [it] were? This display would [doubtless >> doubtlessly] settle any remaining questions in their minds...

Elmhedera

"I don’t know what will hurt more. Finding out that they’re dead, or finding that they don’t recognize me.” Really? Is Jamie supposed to be a sociopath now, or is it just shitty writing?

viewless

So... does Carten speak with a Texan or Scottish accent?

The 49th Khan

Ohhhh shit. I was trying to figure it out. That's definitely possible. If it's him, nice call.

Ziggy

heart warming and some good stuff with the crack in the ground with the Depths that gives some delving potential. Really interesting insight into healing and stuff too.

Pocket Rikimaru Thanatos

A competent man realises ascension matches his goals. So not lucky exactly.

MatrixM

Crimson Gar = Hegar and his party from the first few chapters?

Kendelle Trotter

First a dungeon, now some pvp on the horizon? Nice

Draugluir

Gaahhh I knew I should've started my break from the story after last week's conclusion. Now I want moorrreee. Sigh thanks senescent soul, it was a really nice chapter

MatrixM

Ah could the group be the first guilders rain met? They'll have a level 18 cap now we haven't seen them for awhile. Hegar..... crimson gar..🤔

Yeno Memevig

Right in the feels. Good chapter

wanderer117

I know I've said it before, but your side character POVs have improved by leaps and bounds. I enjoyed the whole chapter. Side note. Getting Samson into the company was lucky as hell. Man is more competent than they deserve.

Ziggy

Lol I love the flex from both Amelia and Tallhart by just jumping the wall.

Alexander Dupree

Thanks for the chapter! That was really good. Now I expect shit to hit the fan.

Yashakami

"One, Two, Five!-" "Three, sir." "Three!"

D. Quinn

Good stuff

Dragonkinn

Hooray and etc!

JC

Yaaayyyyyyyyy!

MatrixM

YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYA

Sebastian Viller

Thanks for the chapter

Alexander Dupree
