WATCH ALONG | CLASSIC DOCTOR WHO | 10x14 | Frontier in Space: Part 6

Comments

The ending is so rushed and confused because producer Barry Letts decided that the costume for the "Ogron Eater" monster had turned out so poorly as to be unusable, and ordered that its involvement in the story be reduced to the absolute minimum. In the final edit, we only see the thing in one exterior long shot, as an amorphous blob wobbling around in the distance on a cliff top -- hardly the "large and savage reptile" described earlier as the planet's dominant life form. It was supposed to reappear at the climax, as the Doctor activates the hypnosound and causes the Ogrons to perceive him as the monster, making them flee in terror and allowing him and Jo to escape in the TARDIS. Instead, script editor Terrance Dicks came up with the idea of the Doctor getting injured as a way to lead from "Frontier in Space" into the next story, and several extra shots (such as the final TARDIS scene) were recorded at the beginning of work on that story and added to this episode to make the climax (more or less) work. (To make things even more disjointed, the two stories were not made consecutively -- "The Three Doctors" had to be recorded in between, because of constraints on Patrick Troughton's availability...) It's really unfortunate that the ending of this story is such a shambolic mess, especially because (as Azmat Mahmood notes above) due to tragic circumstances this would turn out to be Roger Delgado's final appearance as the Master.

Is it there now for you? I just finished watching it so hopefully it is available to you as well.

The reaction for Part 5 seems to be missing... :)
