WATCH ALONG | CLASSIC DOCTOR WHO | 11x14 | Death to the Daleks: Part 4

Comments

Death to the Daleks is a really boring and pointless story imo. The Daleks are probably at their worst, they're almost comedic. The music doesn't help, it plays almost every time they appear onscreen and it's utterly ridiculous and saps all the tension out of a scene. I also really hate how this story throws a potentially really interesting premise out of the window so quickly. The idea that there is something that is draining power from the Daleks and their weapons don't work, so they're forced into an uneasy alliance with the Doctor is really fascinating. The problem is this never goes anywhere because by the middle of episode two the Daleks have developed a secondary weapons system! It's such a missed opportunity. so much interesting drama involving the Doctor and the Daleks was right there on the table! The rest of the plot is also boring and revolves around a plague that's broken out on Earth and an expedition of humans have come to a planet called Exxilon to obtain a mineral called Parrinium, which can cure and give immunity from the plague. The Doctor and Sarah Jane also arrive on the planet and immediately the TARDIS is affected by an energy drain due to a magical city. Trapping them and anyone else on the planet. Including the Daleks, who have arrived on the planet also claiming a plague has affected their colonies and they're forced into an alliance with the humans because their weapons are non-functional and as I've said, this goes nowhere. Of course, the Daleks have plans of their own and their true intention for hoarding Parrinium is to blackmail the galactic powers to accept their demands; refusal would mean the deaths of millions. The story doesn't focus on the political aspects of the story at all. Instead it turns into a simple runaround adventure story all about trying to turn off the energy drain so that everybody can just leave..... Riveting stuff. The whole thing with breaking into the city and the intelligence tests doesn't even make sense anyway. Supposedly, the intelligence tests are in place so that the person breaking in can become the maintainer and guardian of the system, but why does the system need that when it's established the system is self-sufficient and is able to repair itself? Also, if the city was testing people to see who could takeover, why would it create anti-bodies to kill them once they reach the main circuit room? This story is just a mess.
