I didn't like Platner's response to the "illegals" question very much because he directed his response to the liberals in the room, not to that beleaguered conservative. Maine is an interesting place. Even in rural Maine, the population is concentrated on the coasts, which have been a destination for liberal coastal elites (no irony) since the days of the Transcendentalists – since forever! Platner chooses to speak to the moralism of a room full of professional-managerial class liberals (and/or retirees) rather than to the representative of Maine's traditional working class, who is voicing the concerns of every working-class native-born Mainer I know. He does so by preaching the virtue of understanding and our favorite word, "empathy." But consider whether his words amount to the same old Democrat line – "You've been duped into voting against your own best interests! Which we know better than you!" Then he ignores the lady's question.

16:66 a good point was made there about a certain type of, you could say, unproductive ultraleftist. I think we ought to distinguish different subtypes here, or different outward rationales for the posture of permanent opposition. One type has no theory. They may have moralistic beliefs but they may also just be expressing inner frustration as cynicism. Another type, whether overtly or not, has a principle: opposition to incrementalism and conventional electoral politics. Those guys vary from ultra-liberal anarchists to pseudo-Third Worldist MLs. I find the latter particularly interesting
