This was a fun listen, thanks! Gotta say though, I think I must be the oldest person that is interested in this scene/music/whatever. LOL

It’s been really cool having a couple people refer some old LSD releases as Dreampunk classics after being called vaporwave for so long. That also isn’t a stab from myself at vaporwave from that time. I had vaporwave aliases, but LSD just wasn’t one of them

Tbh think I only felt comfortable using that term once we worked together, and now watching the scene evolve into its own thing has been amazing.

Like Lucid Sound Driver outside of drum hits never used samples and because of a few label releases I’ve always been pigeonholed in that. Literally spent like 4-5 years just trying to create work I felt would fit with Dream Catalogue, but felt like a poser using the term “Dreampunk” so used terms like “Dream music”

Holy fuck ambient vaporwave!!! Dude that was my entire time as Lucid Sound Driver.... I always had to tell everyone “Lucid Sound Driver is not vaporwave” despite being labeled an essential vaporwave artist.

Sometimes I want to delete everything I’ve ever made though... like literally delete it all and leave what’s archived online and just start out fresh, and it’s just so hard for me to commit to it, but no lie this podcast is inspiring for this... it’s been a thought I’ve dwelled on for about 2-3 years now

I like the concept of deleting projects as you render them... admittedly scared of that one... I too suffer from the same issues of making multiple drafts allowing myself to become self conscious of my work and it’s such a nightmare and it’s the exact same where I listen to my work and always hear stuff I want to change and it’s soooo tempting.

Also agree on “Tracks start anywhere”... I’ve had songs form for projects that were an audio file about to be deleted. Had one of the best vocal samples I’ve ever used on a track come from an accidental recording of a friend wheezing over Facebook (manipulated the audio to create the word “forming”).

I think the issue is people get pigeonholed in wanting to make a particular genre type out of the gate expecting instant gratification and don’t allow themselves to just experiment.

Kind of like making a stew from every sound and inspiration you’ve come across. It’s interesting though because as these things evolve it seems like there’s always at least one constant... and that usually evolves becomes what people associate as YOUR style . I like to always try and evolve genres we work in and experimentation is what keeps things interesting, but it’s interesting that no matter what wether it’s listening to albums we’ve made from 2015-2021, no matter how vastly different the albums might be... there’s always SOMETHING that can be found shared between each release

I feel music creation starts from a footing of trying emulate sounds you’ve heard (in one context or another wether it’s subconscious or not) and slowly evolving that into your own work.

I enjoy the point of just learning to make music. No need to jump the ship, just learn one thing at a time, and overtime you’ll find yourself where you’re wanting to go. One thing I’d like to add is I don’t think “copying” a style is necessarily a bad thing... at least for learning sake, take reverse engineering sounds
