If you're a student of fiction writing, you'll know that foreshadowing is when an author drops in a seemingly unimportant detail which will later turn out to be crucial to the plot. It helps to avoid the cliche known as the 'deus ex machina', whereby a seemingly intractable problem is abruptly solved by a completely unexpected plot device.
I thought I'd finished all the renders of arrow-pierced Rangers and was ready to concentrate on the battle at the gate, but I've had to go back and put in one more character.
She's not the plot device though- it's something else.
