World Building week 1

First week of world building will focus on the Flora and Fauna of the Nexus. I'm doing this first since it can lead to all sorts of things from food related to professions.

On land there's obviously the fruit trees (not trees but a result of convergent evolution that makes them look like a mix of traditional tree's and bamboo.) There can be a lot here since there's thousands of years of selective cultivation for many uses. (if broccoli can originate from cabbage then there's so many possibilities for different ways the trees can be used).

There's also a few other plants for clothing and other professions or maybe just products from selectively cultivated trees.

In the sea there's going to be coral which was the original intent but I forgot about it until it was too late.

There may be other sea plants that has uses, maybe some that can be made into a sauce for cooking? maybe the silk plant grows in the sea? medicinal plats? There are many possibilities.

I'd love to see what fanastical and interesting ideas you guys can come up with.

On a slightly separate topic the culture would be very reminiscent of the South Pacific and the Polynesian peoples so the environment around there could also be used as reference

For fauna besides already having crabs, eels and shellfish, adding different kinds of vibrantly coloured fish could be used for food and decorations. Frogs, turtles, lobsters can also come in a variety of colours which can be used for Myrou worship. I’m not sure about birds, despite being useful in decorating be peaceful or attacking. I don’t think the dragon would allow them around to bother it or it’s domain. Harpies would be an interesting invasion at some point.

Considering that the the nexus was flooded could plans change due to the overwhelming amount of mana take on new natures and attributes. I could see something like mangroves be used for habitation as well as potential food and building materials. Sentient or semi-sentient plants could also be possible. Whether they are helpful neutral or dangerous/carnivorous. Seaweeds, lilys & giant Lilly pads

Or mosquitoes

There are some similarities between the Runalymo and the Uru people of Peru, specifically regarding their crafting-centered culture and their floating homes. Maybe read up a little on that culture and see if there is anything that sparks the imagination?

I was thinking maybe the Nexus had fauna and flora similar to the Gallapagos islands

I have started a Campfire Blaze profile for this, It's pretty bare right now though.

Since the nexus was creating fire mana for the longest time, maybe have things that adapted to that?

Aegis OT Void

Remember that the water in the nexus is sweet because it is the water that safyr creates and the one outside the nexus is salty. With this, practically all kinds of plants can grow, the only thing that would affect it would be the temperature

Not an idea for this, but for your actual writing of the new/reset book. Add a GoogleDocs link so that people can help with the edits and suggestions. And if you let people know you need help with a specific spot, they can take a look at what you have at that point and give you the advice you were looking for, or the advice you didn't know you needed. You can even make the link in a separate post just for the tier of subscribers you want to have access to it.

To kind of branch off of Maury's post, I think plants that have become resistant to the mana storms, or even bloom or fruit when mana storms happen would be something to consider. The flowers could be a certain dye used in crafting, and the fruits could be, hm, maybe excess mana that the plants are separating off to keep from getting mana poisoning (do plants get mana poisoned?) As for what kind of plants they are, probably small bushes or shrubs would work best, almost like rose bushes maybe?

I dont know much to be honest but maybe there can be a type of flower or tree that changes properties according to the amount of particles of a certain element are present when planted, for example gain fire attributes if it is near a volcano etc. A sea creature I can think of is a sort of pufferfish that camouflages in the coral reefs. It would secrete a type of slime on its back that has a sweet taste, but it is very sticky and can be used to trap prey to allow for spines to deliver venom. This sap can maybe be harvested to act as a very strong adhesive. Another idea is a type of oyster that forms pearls of solid mana out of excess mana particles it absorbs from the environment and the element would change if the oyster was in a mana storm of a different type. Otherwise, I can think of parasitic eels and starfish that drain mana from others.

Heck, I know absolutely nothing about forestry. Uhh... It's a Nexus, it would be cool if there was plants that took on different properties depending on what kind of mana is most abundant. Actually, it would be cool if it was a weird plant cup that fills up with condensed mana during mana storms since they seem to happen so often in the Nexus. And then maybe the runeylemo could use it for dyes that have magical properties. It could be used to make stuff like the ribbon that Alysara received from her kyholo. That's all from me, I came up with it on the spot. I hope this helps.
