World Building Update: Language

This month I am finally working on completing the Runalymo language (Last week there was no world building week because I was working on this). There are around nine hundred syllables/letters so that's nine hundred possible concepts that can be used to make words. This is further increased to over two thousand when adding modifiers like pitch accent to indicate amount/severity and drawn out pronunciation (or something else) to indicate the opposite concept. I can double the amount of letters if needed by incorporating the Runalymo purring in the language

I still have lots of work to do on this project, I need to write down how to actually pronounce each letter, explain the rules of the language and so on but hopefully I can have this mostly done by the end of the month so you guys can give suggestions on what each letter means.

If you guys have any advice or suggestion please let me know.

With enough world building you could be the next Tolkien. Keep up the great work👍

I’m not linguist but I doing that sometimes for language less is more, as there is no language that has all sounds. I’m not saying throw out any of your hard work but this would be a useful tool to build multiple different dialects, creoles and languages. Even using it as a reference to show how language has changed considering the current storylines many different offshoots of a single species. But I can see that for the runalymo language would have as many sounds and syllables as possible to serve in describing beauty as an act of honouring Myrou

I may suggest considering purr consonants a form of non-pulmonic consonants (like clicks, implosives, and electives)

I've been looking into that recently and it's helping a lot. I may even add to manor/place of articulation since the Runalymo can purr which will give them additional sounds to make.

Heyo! I'm a linguist an I've always loved conlangs, a suggestion I have is that if you really want to get into this you may want to look at using the IPA for your development (there's additional consonant and vowel information that could help you make more syllables too)

Michael Melendez I am one of those people 😅 But words like "momara" if I remember correctly (my parents) were really sweet and fun

@alan kaiser I'd rather have more chapters than a poinless language that won't affect the story in a single way

It also didn't affect his story at all and was a waste of time

Just letting you know some of us use text-to-speech. Please be considerate and avoid writing chapters where the speech comes out mangled due to different languages and/or vernaculars.

Tolkien was a linguist.

I’ve never gotten into making a conlang myself but i’ve always found them to be fascinating. Great work mate. If you’re looking for a guy who knows a lot about this topic look up Biblaridion on youtube, the man has been making and studying conlangs for years.

Alan Kaiser

its a creative practice for worldmaking, dude wants to make a conlang, let him. Tolkien made his languages before he made Middle Earth.

Alan Kaiser

Isn't that like kinda pointless?

Why not?
