Sketchbook: 15 Minute Ink Warmup! ✨

Happy Thursday everyone! 💖

I realized I haven't shared much of my rough work with you guys, so here's a really rough and messy page from my Inktober sketchbook! This was a quick 15 minute warmup session just to get my creative thoughts flowing before working on another inktober piece. I learned an exercise in one of my art classes when I was in college where you draw "automatically," without thinking or planning, and just create freely. At first it's a difficult exercise to practice if you're a perfectionist, because the whole point is to ignore perfection and fine detail. Once you get past your perfectionism though, it's a very liberating practice and I totally recommend it once in a while! It's basically mindless doodling and really helps your thoughts flow, especially if you're in an art block 😊✏️

Anywho, if you're interested in seeing more of my messy work in the future let me know! 💖

And if you're curious about the concept of automatic drawing, it's called Automatism in the fine-art world and the formal definition is this: "The avoidance of conscious intention in producing works of art, especially by using mechanical techniques or subconscious associations."

Hope you're all having a lovely week so far!!

Love,

Lydia

Awesome!! I'll definitely be posting more rough work then! 😊 And that is such a good mentality! I can actually see that in your work, I think your most recent painting of the girl with fluffy lavender hair is absolutely stunning and shows a freeness in the brushstrokes 💖

Thank you so much! For the white pen I use a "Gelly Roll 08" that you can find at any art supply store, they're super affordable and work super well! I first started using them on top of my watercolor paintings for extra detail so they work great on top of lots of surfaces :)

I love this so much! And I’d love to see more rough stuff. I’ve recently been learning to not be too tight and perfectionist with my art this month and I feel like it’s looking much better!

I love seeing your rough work. Awesome idea to have birds in her hair! Can I ask about your pens - do you use a white pen? And if so, are there any you would recommend?
