Grrl Power #1342 - I'll show you yours

Thank you for the support! You guys and grrls are awesome!

Did you know it's only been 3 days since the last comic? Because it feels like it's been 3 weeks to me. Every time I move it makes me want to get rid of 90% of my stuff, but I usually only get rid of like 10-15%. I have a box that has nothing but little boxes in it. Little boxes that some of my fancier dice came in. They're pretty nice boxes. Not cheap cardboard, but like that thick posterboard stuff sealed in... contact paper, I don't know. And they have foam inserts to keep the dice nice and snug. Some of those boxes are actually carved wood or die cast metal. I'm never going to put the dice back in those boxes, but I still stared at that box filled with boxes and debated if I should just chuck it all. Why would I keep that? Why wouldn't I keep that. I'm not going to tell you if I decided to keep it. I like dice though. For my birthday last year I splurged and bought myself a 25mm solid Tungsten D20. It was... very expensive. Was it worth it? The day I got it, my wife got home and saw the stupid grin on my face and was like, "What did you buy?" Apparently I have a tell. And yes, it was worth it.

Confession time. I did mess up slightly when I wrote this page, because in my mind, I had shown what the Skybreaker's portal looks like. (The Skybreaker is the thing Sciona cobbled together from that sickle from the underwater vault that she used to hop to her homeworld.) But in fact, I didn't actually show it in the comic, just the reverse shot of lights playing over Deus and Vale. I don't recall why I made that choice at the time, but it messes up this page, where Sciona is supposed to be recognizing her handywork and realizing Deus is profiting from all her efforts. Maxima, however, wouldn't recognize the portal, because here it's functioning correctly, whereas the first time it opened, things went squiffy

Sciona's last line "…for the senator." has the same energy as "They're waiting for you, Gordon… in the test chamber…" I think we all remember that line as a little more dangerous and a lot more arch than it was actually spoken. "...in the tesssst chamber..." In reality it sounds like someone who wasn't specifically cast for a voice full of gravitas just clearly enunciating his line. For some reason, in my mind, it was spoken by the G-Man, and like everything he says, it's in a vaguely threatening register, and the "in the test chamber…" has him on the cusp of sexual gratification, with his voice barely cracking, like he was trying to do an impression of WOPR.  (God, that movie was so good. If you haven't seen it, rectify your transgression.) Of course if Sciona suddenly went all gravel and ice, Maxima might just stop the byplay and demand to know who Sciona, er, Isabella really is. So instead Sciona is just grinding her teeth so hard that powdered enamel is puffing out of her mouth with each breath.

Okay, not really, but close.

They discuss on page 407 whether or not they ever dated. It "depends on which one of [them] you ask."

“I don't recall why I made that choice at the time, but it messes up this page, where Sciona is supposed to be recognizing her handywork and realizing Deus is profiting from all her efforts. “ Don’t worry, the eyes convey that perfectly!

Matthew Thompson

Ironical synergy/karma?? ;-)

Uncle Buddha

Early days in RPGs I did a lot of GMing. Polyhedrals were still a rarity so I accumulated extras whenever I could. Even after I retired from games I had huge dice bag full. In fact I've still got it on my closet shelf.

eddi_TBH

He made himself indispensable to Arc while they were getting off the ground. Max has zero respect for him but needs him alive. Until someone invents the brain in a bottle device.

eddi_TBH

The gate was buried under half a mountain when Sciona transported back to Alari. Max even wrote off recovering it despite Sydney being trapped there. She amazed anyone was that patient or greedy. She still wants it back though. and maybe the contents of Deus' arteries to power it.

eddi_TBH

I can hear it over here.

eddi_TBH

Deus has been doing this since he became Arc's major supplier of specialized gear. The fact Max hasn't turned him into a pile of ashes is a credit to her patience and Realpolitik.

eddi_TBH

I haven't seen a smile as phony as Sciona's since Geppeto painted Pinocchio.

eddi_TBH

Did Max and Dues have a thing once? If so, I can kind of see the playful taunting. Cause maybe he wants her back.

John Van Stry

I can't decide if Deus is just yanking Maxima's chain, or if he actually thinks his antics are getting her turned on. Because if it's the latter, he is as far from a super genius as your average 12 year old Incel in training posting his theories on women on the internet is from being a super genius. The only women who get hot and bothered by a 'confident' (read arrogant) man are dumb as rocks, just like the men who hear a puffed up jackass declare he's the smartest man in the room and immediately think "gosh, he's so smart, I should listen to what he says". Remember kids: The 'con' in conman is short for 'confidence'. People with true confidence don't brag, don't tell you how great they are, don't try to sell you on how great they are. They don't need to, they let their actions speak for them.

Love the expressions on Sciona...

Hugh Eckert

Think Deus is a good guy, in that he makes an effort to help the general population and avoids doing things that harm others. Yes, he takes personal advantage of the situations, is shady as heck, and practical enough to take options where some people will be hurt, but fewer people than if he'd done nothing.

Raymond Dannelly

Dave, Cheyenne Mountain called. They'd like their Stargate back...😉

Carlton R. Harris

Nice how he doesn't mention the name of said inventor... slight ego stroke to Sciona, perhaps to tamp down her ire at having her "tech" borrowed without her "permission"?

William Elliott

I would not want to run into Sciona once she's away from there. She looks ready to rip something (or someone) apart and frustrated that she can't risk it...

Eleanor Asher

Also need that extra dice if, for example, that first d20 rolled a natural one multiple times and now your no bread, no cheese, reindeer meet and water chestnut “sandwich” is a smoothie, and oh look these dice have the one ring in them.

Miyaa

Deus is always so confident, even around Max and others who could destroy him with apparent ease. I wonder what his true physical powers might be to justify such assurance? I am starting to think that he is more than a super-brain...

Tie Toter

As long as by person you mean a set per character I've played in campaigns...

Matthew Lambert

Possibly she's better known in the US, which is why she's out pacifying would-be "unsettling" elements in Africa (or that's where she was last IIRC)

Mark Magagna

Not unique, but you are a rare bird. I'm at the stage where it's unusual for me to buy dice. But then I already have a lot of them (and more to the point a lot of unusual ones).

Mark Magagna

Donate those cool boxes to a second hand store. I guarantee that they will find a happy home.

Town Crier

The room beyond the open portal looks an awful lot like the portal control room from Stargate SG-1. Purely coincidental, I'm sure.

Ray

Am I the only tabletop role player who sees no need for more than one set of dice per person?

Stephen Gilberg

It's coming. Promise. :)

Dave Barrack

Sciona is spreading that ”Okay, these people are getting a little too powerful a little too quickly for my liking”-look around quite liberally, isn’t she? XD

Tim

Sooo... how is the coloring of Heatwave/Jiggawatt going? ;)

Lars Bencze

I see Deus as a more playful David Xanatos from Gargoyles except Deus likes to show off constantly. What happened to the pink haired bodyguard of his?

Enigma42

Yeah, Deus is playing things at the (Inter)Planetary level, while being based out of Earth. He's going to do things that benefit Earth as a whole, because those will ultimately benefit him. However, at the smaller scale... given the number of international pies he has his fingers in, I wouldn't trust him at the (Inter)National level to necessarily be doing things that benefit the USA, because something that — for example — weakens the USA while strengthening Galytn might benefit him, personally, more than the reverse.

James C

Isn't that supposed to be the definition of a high-functioning and socially adjusted sociopath? Or am I remembering it wrong?

Anton Schleef

I am entirely worried for the state of the city after Sciona and Deus get alone together.

Hamish Clarkson

Actually, "Deus" is a self centered, egotistical, slightly maniacal, pain in the @$$, who just so happens to live up to all of his own hype. He'll pull some VERY shady deals, manipulate the crap out of those around him, but generally, he's a "good guy", primarily for his own self interest. Jail is annoying and boring.

JasonAW3

Would it be irony for the blood mage to die of an rage induced aneurysm?

3of4

I put him squarely in the good guy as long as it benefits him category. Otherwise he's a-moral and people are important only because a kingdom with no people to rule is just make believe in your living room on a much larger scale

SilverScrolls

OK, the proper name for the Skybreaker SHOULD be "The Cosmic Can Opener"...

JasonAW3

One dirty look later and Deus is the winner. No one is surprised.

Michael Obert

If Deus ends up being a, mostly, good guy it will be the twist of the century.
