Added 2024-07-23 09:00:06 +0000 UTCMichael and Peter discuss Persuasion, Yascha Mounk's newsletter for so-called heterodox thought, and use it as a window into the reactionary centrist mind.

2025-06-26 21:00:39 +0000 UTCRe-listening and god that “whatever happened to flirting” article complaining about the “male gaze” being vilified is so annoyingggg oh my god it’s a film theory concept, it’s a complex film theory concept, yes the male gaze is bad because it’s a film theory concept about how women’s bodies are depicted in film. It is a theory about a bad thing. Nobody would read “visual pleasure and narrative cinema” and say “this male gaze thing sounds like it’s being vilified” because the article is about misogyny in film via complex Freudian analysis. Male gaze isn’t “man looks at woman and thinks wow she’s hot”

2025-05-20 15:58:27 +0000 UTCPeter saying "liberal institutions will align with fascists when fascism starts to ascend" feels super prophetic from April 2025.

2025-04-06 15:28:05 +0000 UTCAs a super fat lady living in America, I could have sex any time I wanted to. I get attention from men, all of it unwanted. To imply that all non-thin, non-white, or disabled women want sexual attention is INSANE

2025-01-10 04:15:52 +0000 UTCLol, the idea that we should embrace the male gaze because women are sexually dissatisfied is WILD. Could it be that straight women in America are dissatisfied because they live in a culture centered on men’s sexual desire and pleasure at the expense of their own safety and bodily autonomy?? Of course not, trickle-down sexonomics!

2024-08-16 19:50:32 +0000 UTCMichael mentioned on the last episode about twin studies being notoriously questionable. Does anyone know what he's referring to? I didn't find anything critical about the twin study design in my -all be it limited- research. Did I misunderstand?

2024-08-16 01:45:35 +0000 UTCMy 19-year old son and I are driving cross country and this is among our top 3 podcasts! Like previous episodes, The Reactionary Centrist has been very engaging and prompted some thoughtful and animated discussion. Thank you both for delving so deeply into this material—I admire your intellects!—and for continually managing to make us laugh, despite the often frustrating and oversimplified nature of the airport book.

2024-07-26 16:36:26 +0000 UTCI’m just commenting on Peter’s comment about “if you watch the Tesla investor’s conference, flying cars are just six months away!” “Flying cars” may not look like what you imagined, but they’re way, way closer to reality than you think. Not only that, a lot of the leading companies are developing electric- or hydrogen-powered vehicles, so there’s a good chance it will be a largely electric industry, with infrastructure designed for electric vehicles from the early stages, like vertiports (airports built for vertical takeoff and landing vehicles) being built with charging stations from the beginning. I work at a community college that is heavily involved in an Advanced Air Mobility collaboration, and eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) vehicles are literally being designed and tested at the municipal airport in my city. Look into companies like Joby, Lift Aircraft, Beta, and Volocopter for just a few examples.

2024-07-26 16:17:06 +0000 UTCI just want to call attention to how the power dynamic in catcalling can be magnified for people who don't conform strictly enough to the status quo. My girlfriend gets catcalled pretty regularly and when she tells guys to fuck off they often respond with racist, fat phobic or homophobic slurs and insults.
