Who's Afraid of Naomi Wolf?
Added 2024-03-28 09:00:07 +0000 UTCWe're finally discussing a good book! Naomi Klein's "Doppelganger" chronicles the long, steady descent of another Naomi — Wolf (buddy oof) — from feminist icon to crank conspiracist.

2025-01-28 22:09:35 +0000 UTCI love this episode, and I loved this book! I want to offer that I don’t think Klein is arguing that the left, or Wolf’s friends, should have embraced her more to stop her from getting embraced by the far right. I don’t think she’s arguing that there’s anything any individual could or should have done—I think she’s just exploring the narrative and psychology that led Wolf to where she is. And so for that reason I appreciate her empathy for Wolf, because it acknowledges her humanity, but she certainly doesn’t let her off the hook for the wild shit she’s said and done. Love the pod, the horse stuff is gold :)

2024-07-03 14:34:23 +0000 UTCJust finished reading Klein’s book, and it was one of the best books I’ve read in years. Thanks for the rec, y’all, and please consider covering more “actually good” books!

2024-06-22 20:20:23 +0000 UTCI think what caused Wolf to fall down the conspiracy hole was the consumption of fluoridated water.

2024-04-06 01:30:42 +0000 UTCI thought it was fine. It could have been more rigorous for sure but the main debunkings in the book are broadly correct and backed up with research and data if you're familiar with them outside the book. Hurricane katrina, for instance, is a very famous example of the news media talking about how the (majority black) locals were doing killings and rapes and looting when absolutely none of that was happening.

2024-03-29 19:09:26 +0000 UTCWhen it comes to Wolf’s dissertation, it looks like it was in English Lit, so her advisor and probably everyone on her committee (who would have to sign off on her work) would have been Lit scholars and not historians. That’s a really different perspective to bring to a piece of writing, and honestly part of why the lack of much real interdisciplinary work in the humanities is, imho, a real problem. (Of course I am a historian so there’s that bias here—I feel like all my colleagues and I had a sort of profound combo when it happened: on the one hand, feeling for her in that moment to the point of physical cringing, and on the other hand intense schadenfreude over seeing someone get owned hard for not running her historical ideas by a relevant historian.)
