Eric Adams vs. Bail Reform
Added 2024-04-18 09:00:06 +0000 UTCA few years ago, New York reformed its bail system. Since then, police and their close ally Mayor Eric Adams have successfully manipulated the public into believing that the reforms have been a disaster. Peter and Michael discuss how police have used taxpayer money to fund massive PR operations and control media narratives about crime.

2025-09-10 01:38:54 +0000 UTCUnapologetically re-raising the comments section of this year-old post... God, every politician in the last century is playing 2 truths and 1 lie like "Something is wrong with our criminal justice system. Convicted criminals are being released onto the streets so they can commit again. Something clearly isn't working and it's only causing further harm to the most vulnerable of our communities." Man, they're so close...

2025-03-17 20:56:17 +0000 UTCIs there anyway to pay for a single episode. I want to share this with a friend with whom I have regular arguments about bail reform.

2024-12-07 18:11:31 +0000 UTCI am a civil servant in upstate New York. My colleagues whose children are correction officers are against bail reform because, “their kid needs a job (or overtime)”. Shame.

2024-07-26 00:18:11 +0000 UTCThis is my favorite episode of If Books Could Kill because they finally did a story about the person Peter is impersonating when he’s doing a voice.

2024-05-16 06:36:55 +0000 UTCOn episode ideas: I still don’t understand the tax changes that came during the F-ing Trump years, in relation to small business expenses. Like, I guess our tiny consulting and writing business is “qualified” or something. I might have that term wrong. But I don’t know the in-group tax language any longer and so many of my friends with independent businesses have problems now because we have to try to learn a whole new set of rules. It’s just a schedule C and a 1040 form where we take the standard deductions instead of schedule A now. I learned that much. But my husband doesn’t know how to classify equipment purchased because I’m disabled and now I learned husbands and wives have to open their own separate practices for freaking home businesses and track separate schedule C expenses. What if we go to a meeting together? Are we a Partnership now?! Is there a book or an IRS law to read/comprehend/debunk? Well, anyway, none of this is sexy. I found myself trying to translate the tax law document at the irs.gov site, and when I startled awake after apparently passing out… I realized I couldn’t make heads or tails of it. It’s truly hurting my brain and soul, however. I don’t know if I have to refile previous years. I don’t even have the bandwidth to do what we are already doing very well. This is a lot of anxiety to throw at people. We can’t afford an outside accountant. Their irs guide for small businesses on the changes doesn’t load for me on my browser. Is it age and I had figured this out as a youngster so now my brain says no; life is too short? Do others have unsaid issues they’re silently grinning and bearing? I mean, like we are a tiny business making maybe a thousand extra bucks a month. And sometimes I’m too sick to work at all, so… This is not some big enterprise here. Nor do we intend to be.

2024-05-07 19:06:38 +0000 UTCHi guys, love your show. Do you know the writer Rutger Bregman and his book Humankind? It’s a terrible but hugely influential book about how people are inherently good and it’s only media, evil corporations and other actors that make us believe that humans are bad. It’s soooo bad. A Dutch syndicate of smart people actually did a 10 (!) part debunking series of it on YouTube (look for ‘Snijtafel’ and the Dutch title of the blok ‘Meeste mensen deugen’). But that’s of course all in Dutch. I’d love to hear you take on this book. Because it’s still selling like hot cakes. As is its successor. And it’s corrupting minds of good people everywhere.

2024-05-07 12:34:38 +0000 UTCHello Mike and to a lesser extent Peter (sorry). Would you consider an exhausting takedown on effective altruism in so-called development? Would you also consider a collaboration with Behind the Bastards/It Could Happen Here? The crew there did an episode on EA. Lastly, are you still writing long-form, Mike? I live in the U-District and am involved in the migrant camp. We need help!
