Goob. No. "Mark Twain" wasn't shouted to determine the depth of the river, like echo location or sonar. It was one of several depth measurement shorthands used by crews who determined depth using a plumb bob, dropped into the water on a rope that was marked every few feet, or a pole used to directly measure the depth as the boat travelled. They would "sound" the depth meaning shout it out. "Twain" was used because the rope was 25 feet long and 12 feet was sufficient draft for the river boats, and "Twain" means half way. So they would go along and constantly measure depth, if they hit a sand bar, they could destroy the boat and kill a thousand people, so they were very careful with it. They would drop the lead weight , walk backwards along the deck until it either hit bottom or the length of the rope, and shout the depth so the captain could hear it. Apparently travel by river boats was annoying like always hearing ambulances or something to wake you up. Who knew. Samuel Clemens took the name Mark Twain because that was usually the safe depth for the boats. If you heard Mark Twain, you knew you were safe.
