Animatic Work Process

Greetings! As I've been busy with irl stuff, moving between homes and whatnot, I haven't had as much time as I'd like to focus my efforts on animation projects. However, that didn't stop me from making some headway with each of projects I do have going on.

This one, currently untitled, is the start of a new non-private project featuring several storyboards and laica reels. Since I didn't have a lot of time to commit to any involved animation work I wanted to take my time with planning this out with the recipient. You'll notice I uploaded a sample size of three edits I've made to the reels. Laika 1 representing the earliest rendition of the story involving four girls, three of which fall victim to the fourth host, two of them to merge with the chest and the third down below. Since some details were unclear I made a first pass with my own interpretations: The first two victims would be having a romantic session resulting in their entire bodies being absorbed at once while the third had a rude awakening being absorbed last. There was also a request for self-enjoyment before the shot finished.

I anticipated these transformations might cause the victims to panic and fear the process, but as you'll see following some back and forth I had made several changes in Laika 2. Now the first two girls were absorbed in a more particular manner, the shot cut a bit to place more focus on this, I retained several of the original panels while adding a few new ones in the process. This did result in an 'overshot' of 3-7 seconds of footage from the originally agreed running time. In this case it wasn't a huge deal since the last shot was something I added as a flavor of acting.

Once again feedback augmented the changes, so with Laika 3 we tried adding faces in place of the organs and hair, additionally the girls would enjoy the process instead of panic or fear it. I ended up making a few strategic cuts to help shorten the running time and focus on the main visual messaging.

Ultimately we settled on the animatic you now see above, faces were kept but hair from the chest was removed, I also added more expressions as a placeholder to indicate what each face might be feeling or expressing at any given moment. I could have taken the eyebrows out but it does add more to the expression having them in. With this approved I'll be moving into production in the coming months.

Normally I would also include character sheets, test sketches and the like but most of that was already made available by the recipient so moving ahead with those designs helps quite a bit ^^ I hope you enjoyed my exploratory explanation of the pre-production process.
