Oh, not only do you have to provide an email, I have to make an account!!! Usually I just give a bogus email and I get to view the result but no, only sent to my email… just gave them all my body information and now I can’t see the results

Jane

Things have in fact gotten so much worse since February 😭

michelle pendergrass

The answer for Michael to live to 96 is obviously that Aubrey needs to start a bean cult.

Kristy Moore

Hi guys! I live in a small ish town in NorCal, and when the covid vaccine rolled out, it caused a lot of division in my community. Lots of anti vaxx talk and telling people with the vaccine death was eminent. Now a lot of those same people are on Ozempic or similar GLP1s. I was curious if this is something you guys might be interested in looking into. Clearly antifatness is a larger value to a lot of people than the greater good of vaccinations. I just think there’s a lot there. It’s a serious cultural moment.

Ari Shirv

In the UK, Alex Jones is a lovely Welsh TV presenter lady, so I always get confused.

Laura M

As Aubrey would say, "Thanks, I hate it."

J Heade

Aubrey, why the wheezing? U good? It hurts my ears

Saadia

Does it seem possible that the reason Dan is calling these Blue Zones is because they’re all nice places he wanted to vacation to? Maybe the BZs are an unrealized desire to travel~

Syd Mantrom

Brb going to get "Stop Eating When You're 80% Full" tattooed on my tramp area.

Lindz

Just got out of a Plant-based eating seminar from a nutritionist from Kaiser Permanente and she not only mentioned Blue Zones but the catchphrase "From a plant, not a **processing** plant!"

Jayme Taylor

The quiz is so funny. I am a fat chronically ill disabled person and I’m going to live to 99.9 but I could live to 100.7! I’m also about the same age as Michael (about 6 months younger).

Amy Harth

OMG, I’m sitting in the lobby of a bloodwork place, and they’re plugging “how to live like people in the Blue Zones” on their little TV spin video. I want to stand up and yell, “it’s all bunk!” 😑

Alice Benham

You don't have to soak them at all if you cook them in a crock pot

Brittany Crawford

As somebody who just finally gave in to Rancho Gordo hype I saw that and thought it was hilarious. They also feature a Dan Buettner recipe in their recipe section lol

Sierra Wilson

omg I just realized the life expectancy test is just that bit from grim adventures of billy and mandy. "basically everything gets you 12 minutes! eat some broccoli, 12 minutes! ride your bike, 12 minutes, theyre all 12 minutes!"

Lilith Anderson

hey Mike, have you considered converting to Judaism? I heard you can live two years longer, so that's why I converted!

Rowan

'i just wanna set an iCalendar event for your death' is insaaaaaane omg

M

Not sure what the crossover of Gastropod and Maintenance Phase fans are, but the recent Gastropod episode contains a Greatest Hits of MP topics including Blue Zones and Marion Nestle!

Beth

How absolutely incensed Mike was in this episode very cathartic for me, thank you

Lisa Cooper

When taking the quiz, I got a few weeks taken off my life expectancy for not eating seafood… which I’m ALLERGIC to. Guess I better get ready to hit the ER so I can add 15 more days to my life

Cara H

Given the inanity of that test thing I'm shocked 750 people bothered to return to it at the end of the "intervention" 🤣

G Young

Episode request: Wheat Belly by Dr William Davis. Popular, questionable science, and his other books are about getting rich. I’d love to hear your and Michael’s researched response to the whole “wheat is bioengineered and killing you” thing. Thank you!

Bonnie Bilger

It's tragically funny that this stuff always comes back to eat fruits and vegetables, do some exercise and form social and community bonds.

SC

Indeed..They don't seem to understand why cooking exists ..Most food loses some nutrients from cooking, but it also kills germs. Not much use having all the nutrients from broccoli if you're going to get gastro

SC

Episode request! Breath by James Nestor. The whole time I was reading that book, I was thinking “this is very compellingly written and my methodology queen radar is going HAYWIRE.” That book needs the Maintenance Phase treatment so hard. Thank you as always for the incredible content. You are both so smart and so fun to podcast-hang with. (Side note: Michael, I’m DYING for you to do an If Books Could Kill episode on “Date-onomics.” That book was like poison in my single-person mind for years.)

Andrea Grody

Oh Mike… unfortunately there are plenty of those “raw food” types who DO think broccoli loses its nutrients when cooked….

Victoria Tang

Got me looking at beans online on a Tuesday night when I should be sleeping 🤣 I want to try these fancy beans!

Sarajmahal

ROLL THE BEAN FOOTAGE had me cackling at work cause that was exactly my thought too 🤣🤣 so glad Aubrey said that

Sarajmahal

We need to see the Bean Shelf 😂

Sarah Stanley

At least Whole30 is used in a way that's supposed to eliminate things only temporarily to see what your food sensitivities are. I ignored the like 20 to 30% of just absolute unhinged logic around sugar versus banana ice cream versus mental whatever, and I did figure out that I have a sensitivity to legumes and I used it as fuel to get tested for celiac which I now know I have! So if used appropriately, it's an Elimination Diet that can be helpful for figuring out autoimmune issues at times.

K J

You two are giving me life in this hellscape.

Sarah Beedoo

I really enjoyed the carly rae jepsen opening 😇

Avery

I think that Audrey's little breaths may be what keeps me alive for the next however long, lol

Erin

I study Okinawan history, specifically Okinawan food culture and the Blue Zone coverage is SO frustrating. Okinawans definitely do eat a lot of nutritious foods, lots of plants and fish, but there are so many way more interesting things about Okinawan food, not to mention that the reason they have such long lifespans is definitely a mix of genetics and strong social support for elders. Okinawa has been subject to both Japanese and Chinese imperialization and Okinawan food is a really interesting mix of both + South East Asian elements.

Geneva Samuelson

I took the quiz and it said I’ll live to 82, but only be heathy until about 72. BUT I could add 15 years to my life! Which is not something I want to do if I’m not healthy, lol. It told me to eat less meat and more fruit which is really not my problem… oh and I should drink red wine even though I’m allergic. Haha what a great quiz.

ryoknits (Rhiannon)

Thank you both for getting into the Universal Healthcare aspect of these Blue Zones!! I didn't get a cancer diagnosis for a decade, because I was uninsured. Having healthcare is soooo much more important than just your diet/exercise regimen. I've definitely been ranting about this to everyone I know for years lol

Alice

Wellness™️ grifters always reduce health inputs to what you eat, how you move, or which gunk you smear on your body. In short, products or programs that they can sell you. It's like they've never heard the words "genetics", "environment", or "social determinants of health".

Marusha

It's weird to answer some of those for the past 7 days when I've been down with COVID for the past 10 or so days

Liza

My phone heard me talking about this episode I keep seeing blue zone recipe videos. They're good recipes! But I don't need the blue zone marketing - I just like food!

qqq qqq

“Fat or whack skeleton” really got me good 😆. Excellent episode with a perfect ending

Sam Williams

I took the quiz. It has me dead in a few years, only one more healthy year to go. What with the not drinking and hating beans, I am doomed!!!!!!! I have a friend who loved this show. So glad you covered this.

Donna Shrout

Lay those recipes on me!!! I am so ready for the ice cream diet.

Kayla Childs

My Grandma just passed away about two months ago at age 96, almost 97. Her favorite foods were ice cream and Reese's Pieces lol.

Janelle Johnson

When michael said “now the Greece episode” I thought he was talking about the musical Grasse

J Phoebus

I feel like we need a grifter database at this point. Just a list with supporting links for each name. I guess that would be, huh, like basically everyone who's ever been on Oprah or Doctor Phil.

Elizabeth Gunn, sickly but cruel

This is pissing me off so much. I don't know what you would call this when it's in respect to a European place, somewhere extremely rural or pastoral or in some way living out an older lifestyle, but it feels exactly like orientalism. Endlessly extractive, trying to make a lifestyle fucking modular in service to an imperial worldview.

Elizabeth Gunn, sickly but cruel

Mike! You could have just recorded a video of the show on your phone!

Katy Watson

You guys - that totally happened to me! I have a painful genetic disorder that disabled me around the time I was 42, but my heart is in fantastic shape and others in the family with the disease have lived into their 90s! And no amount of beans or booze could have changed either of these things. And I hope to God my kids don’t try to take care of me themselves after my mind is gone and my heart keeps ticking on.

Krissa Swain Randolph

You guys are the best as always! Laughing out loud on my walk this morning 🤣🤣the last 10 mins literally Aubrey saying "I got 6 months left" AHAHAHAH

Elena Tognoni

The way this episode (and the one on the main feed) has joker-ified me is now anyone tells me a story about someone older than 90-95, I'm like "They're not that old. Probably just came from a place with shoddy war-torn record keeping." 😆🤦🏼‍♀️

Nicole

Oh no. Allergic to beans. I'm doomed.

Stephanie Sablich

Yes I'd love this episode!

Abby Whitewell

I'd love your take on UPFs cause people don't seem to realize cooking = processing. Or the whole glucose monitor/glucose spike thing right now, it's so silly

Betty

Right after listening to your Blue Zones episode last month I was watching an episode of House Hunters: International and the place they were moving to was considered a "blue zone". I laughed so hard.

Gabi Cote-Jump

Petition for Aubrey to change her username to The Beanfluencer

Tori Snowden

Can't believe that test didn't ask me if I'm left-handed. That shit means I'm dying in like 20 minutes.

Frances Serge

I legit shrieked "because of fucking covid!" when the documentary intro went "in the past few years, American life expectancy has decreased" 🤦‍♀️

Angela O'Connor

You guys should do a follow up Belle Gibson episode about the new Netflix show, Apple Cider Vinegar! I want to know your guys’s thoughts!

Jordan Hickson

Mike! If Books Could Kill got a shout out in the newest episode of Welcome to Nightvale

Melissa M

Yes, I was wondering if that’s where she gets her beans. I want to be part of the bean club

Melissa M

Yeah those people don't seem to understand why cooking exists...we know it looses some nutritional value but it also kills germs.

SC

Pro tip, Michael, you can record audio by sticking a double ended aux cable into both the output and input jacks ;-)

Catrina Solei

Michael saying that no one says heating broccoli up makes it lose all its vitamins... please deep dive into the Raw Food diet hooligans :D

Joanna

Not Aubrey saying she has a "bee in [her] bonnet" about the honey vs sugar debate and no one commenting on the pun :)

Joanna

You may be the beanfluencer, but are you even in the Rancho Gordo Bean Club?!

Rachel Heart

As a bike lane fanatic (my volunteer life involves working on grants on behalf of our city for cycling and walking infrastructure and then trying to get city council to support bike lanes) Mike's rant about bike infrastructure spoke to my soul.

Amiee Flynn-Curran

I just took the True Vitality Test, and it said my Healthy Life Expectancy was 32, Predicted Life Expectancy was 39, and Potential Life Expectancy is 64. I'm 31, almost 32 now. I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes a year and a half ago, but that still seems like an insanely pessimistic prediction. Maybe I accidentally skipped some of the questions? Or I'm just not eating enough beans. 😬 (Update) I retook the test and realized I'd put that I have 4 drinks a day when I meant 4 drinks over the past 7 days. My updated life expectancy is 43. Phew. Reading the summary under the test results and see it defines Healthy Life Expectancy as "Years free of cancer, heart disease, and diabetes." Guess I'm already past that. 😅 (In all seriousness though, I'm managing my diabetes pretty well and go to the doctor regularly, so it seems unlikely I'm going to drop dead at 43.)

Rebecca Gonshak

"bleu zones" is so dumb and silly but also I listened to it 3x and laughed everytime 😂

Ronan

Need Aubrey's bean recipes please.

Amy

OH MY GOD I knew that health initiative thing in my home town in Iowa was sus! This is wild.

Allison Akright

i also heard wax skeleton the first time i heard him say it. He’s saying “whack”!

Laura Parent

Omg after reading the comments I’m checking out the rancho gordo beans website and there’s a blurb that says: “For those in the know, Napa-based Rancho Gordo is the go-to source.” -BlueZones.com (!!)

Grace Sinopoli

Wait what's a wax skeleton, I must have missed that in a previous episode

jane deaux

Similar-ish? https://open.spotify.com/episode/7ujpdCPK5hKPgUYDGV87aV?si=J_zpdE9wS1iUkXLPc2KExQ

Angie Babbitt

i need you guys to cover parasites on the main feed… my sister is talking about how she did a “parasite cleanse” for a week and talking about in detail about what PARASITES she found as a result of

Maria Mancz

https://www.ranchogordo.com/

Alex Hendrickson

I agree that requiring an email to get results is a punishable offense.

Alex Hendrickson

Listening to you two lose your shit and collapse with laughter is the balm that my soul really needed right now. 🥰

gwyn

Aubrey's reduced healthy life expectancy is because they want you to bike around which means you're gonna get hit by a cybertruck in the next year /j

fig leaf

I am a medical Laboratory Technician, and, yep.

Kathi

I came here to say this. 😂

Jennifer R.

I was definitely thinking Aubrey is in the Bean Club!

Jennifer R.

Hey Mike! You made it into this week’s NYT quiz! You have arrived!

Mary Robsonnes

WAIT WHERE CAN I GET THESE FRESHER DRY BEANS???

Ally Mooney

About to take a shower and listen to this amazing episode. I expressed to my partner that the intro music is my 'happy place.' Presently being transposed to bass (their instrument) 💓

Guru Mantra Khalsa

Aubrey made it to 100 with all the beans lol

Jennifer Mateer

Can’t speak for Aubrey, but I am a huge fan of Rancho Gordo beans!

Danelle

Yeah, it's bc Dan Beuttner is making things up as he goes along haha

fig leaf

I caught that too, especially because many people are vegetarian for religious reasons. However, your sources conflict with each other and the way the data is presented is kind of apples to oranges. Gallup states 5% of poc are vegetarian (as opposed to 4% of white ppl), but Faunalytics says vegetarians are 48% poc. The latter also didn't measure income level. To clarify, I'm not saying you're wrong, I just want to text you know that your sources are confusing from an outside perspective! I completely agree that the definition of vegetarians as white + wealthy is just unhelpful.

fig leaf

Okinawans eat the most Spam per capita in the World. So, really we should be looking into the health preserving properties of canned pork.

Erin Clark

They can't, that's the whole flaw. He's just making things up based on semi-arbitrary health markers.

fig leaf

I'm sure I'm missing something, but can anyone explain how the guy could say they added 3+ years to life expectancy when only a year had passed?

Breda

Hi Mike! Longtime fan here. You made a throw away comment about vegetarians being more likely to be white and wealthy. Data shows that this is not only untrue but trends the opposite way. https://news.gallup.com/poll/510038/identify-vegetarian-vegan.aspx https://faunalytics.org/who-are-the-vegetarians/ These stereotypes are really common in discourse and often weaponized to discredit vegetarianism/veganism and also make veg choices seem like some elite, performative thing (and not like the serious boycott of one of the most morally atrocious industries of our time). It also leads to a lot of POC vegans (like me!) feeling erased. I have so much respect for the way you always read deeply into the research so I hope you’ll appreciate the links above :)

Mimi

It's not one of the recipes on the BZ website. Cowards.

Tossow

I need to know if with all his talk about adventist diets Dan Beuttner ever had the balls to tell people to eat Special K Loaf

Tossow

Rancho Gordo beans!!

Totally an Elinor

Bush's baked beans?! I laughed out loud, thanks for bringing some joy

PdxErin

"bleue zones" had me cackling

Mary Bell

On that Minnesota town — they claim to have added three years of life expectancy but it’s only been one year?? I’m bad at math but thrwre is something off about that number.

Karen Cox

I can’t be the only one here who is in the Rancho Gordo Bean club, right?! Aubrey, if you don’t know about it, it is great for the bean folk! And definitely no soaking required : )

Monica B.

So every time I go to the grocery store for more than one day I am actually making people fatter? Is that how this works???

Karen Cox

What if the salty snack was freeze dried edamame beans? Do I earn days to my life then?

Felix

…oh and he loved your main feed ep 🙂

Jamie Johnson

A local politician I know got the “make your municipality a Blue Zone” pitch. We had a good laugh imagining the other grifts we could start that nobody could validate or disprove for a few decades….

Jamie Johnson

Girl same

Emily Baker

Them’s some good beans

Emily Baker

I live in mn. MnDot has some good ideas sometimes. Sometimes they suck but better walkability and biking is actually a goal for them

Katie Schlasner

Roll that beautiful bean footage had me giggling 🤣

Arin Sullivan

I gotta say guys, listening to this episode had me laughing out loud for the first time in weeks. Thank you both so much, especially Aubrey the Bean Queen!

Mary Ravella

@1:42 - “I don’t know what to do and I feel bad and scared.” Yup. Me too. Probably the best description of my current state.

C. Mark Halberstadt

I vote for bonus episode of just Michael doing Carly Rae Jepsen karaoke

Jen Goldberg Leonard

I would love this as well, and would love to hear about how h5n1 ties into it

Chaos Baby

I would be so intrigued to learn about Transcendental Meditation. There's a lot of talk about how it HAS to be done correctly etc etc and in order to learn it "correctly", you have to pay actually very many dollars. The grifty senses are tingling.

Chaos Baby

My day was so crazy, I had to restart this episode like 5 times. But I was worth it. Especially the fucking amazing last line. 🤣

Amber Smigiel

I was gonna say that lol that's why there are raw foodists

heathermama7

I was waiting for Aubrey’s little breaths and a tires on the table joke after “leaving good years on the table”

April S

Cancelling my patreon, listened 5 min, re-upped. 3 dollars for monthly joy, worth it.

Julia

Soaking is just starting the hydration process before the heat

Julia

Weirdly, im shifting to canned (vigorously rinsed) to keep my earthquake food current. Dried beans are so perfect and low maintenance, but oregon is overdue for a big quake.

Julia

Who else will watch terrible docs and merrily explain?

Julia

Oh Michael. People do say that cooking vegetables removes all the vitamins 😤

Erica McKernan

Rancho Gordo

Erica McKernan

Tell me Aubrey is in the Rancho Gordo bean club with me

Erica McKernan

I checked for that too! 😅

April S

Looking forward to watching the documentary interview of centenarian Aubrey Gordon in 60 years!!!

Stephanie Gustafson

Ooh, who is that?

Alyssa Boyle

Seconded!!!!

Michelle

YESSSS I REQUESTED THIS EPISODE!!!!!! ALSO THE CARLY REY JEPSON REFERENCE YESSSS

Jenna Koch

Great Episode! You mentioned Raw Milk in this episode and I hope it means you’re working on that as a topic for a future episode! Especially as an original template of most American nutrition misinformation is the Raw Milk advocate, Weston A. Price—the 1890s dentist who killed his son by performing a botched root canal on his son, retired from practice afterwards and reappeared in the 1920s to go on a world tour to find out what was causing cavities (because maybe cavities were like pellagra and could be cured with a vitamin), spoiler alert he blames “processed modern foods” and praises pre-scientific “lost/secret” knowledge. And his foundation is the center of raw milk advocacy in the US to this day. His book, Nutrition and Physical Degeneration is fascinating, it’s garbage, and shows that creatively bending health data (that he was allegedly gathering himself) wasn’t new even in the 1930s; like comparing percentages to whole numbers, “35% of [bad group] had cavities, but we found only 13 cavities in [good group].”

Adam S

Pretty sure that'll give you super-powers. It definitely means you have won at life.

Kazoolhu

I would love some bean recipes!!

Alison

This.

Stephanie Gooding

Michael's intro just killed me🤣🤣

Elise

So thankful for “jokerfied” being added to my vocabulary 🫶

Liz Banks

Humbly requesting an Aubrey beanisode where she just shares her best bean recipes please 🙏

Maxi Mailloux

Lol, I read that as panties not pantries 😂😂😂

Libbi

Thank you! I got the HPV vaccines and still had an abnormal pap and had to get a colposcopy. I was shocked and then learned that the vaccine only provides protection against some HPV strains - not all.

Cori Bogle

Could you please do an episode on the vegan teacher?

SnakeGrl

Also I want Aubrey to do stand up comedy she fkn cracks me upppp

L

“Be normal about a place that people live in the world, Dan.” “Yeah be normal, Dan” Fkn loved this exchange for some reason

L

The amount of bean-related shenanigans in this episode is a pure delight. 🤣

Liz Grimaldi

That little tangent on different ways different places would refer to the blue zones had me rolling around. You two are too silly.

Krystal Taylor

I suggest for a fun episode: bean derived "health" foods taste test

Sarah

Do you think answering a higher number of bean servings increases your life expectancy on the calculator?

Sage Wile

You two bean lovers need to cover Whole30 sometime — they hate beans on that diet!

Ellen F.

MICHAEL! We need to talk about beans! You totally don't have to soak them! I make refried pinto beans all the time. I use regular store brand pintos, and I never soak them overnight. To cook: just rinse them, boil them for 5 minutes, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 1.5-2 hours. Presto, beans!! (There are more steps to make your cooked pintos into actual refried beans, but this is in the initial cooking part.) To be fair, this is not a "oh shit I forgot to plan dinner tonight" system - the beans still take a while to cook. But it's a *very* low effort way to get a week's worth of lunches done on a Sunday afternoon. To be even more fair, yes, some beans will take longer to cook than pintos (teparies, for instance). But don't deprive yourself of the wonders of cooking dry beans! Soaking is not required!

Astraea

I put this on while still laying in bed this morning and re-listened to “CUT TO THE FEE-LIN” at least 6 times

Laura Bee

I took the life expectancy test for fun. I got 73.2, 86.2, and 96.9. Why is Michael dying so early?!?

Jamie Ingram

I read "TRULY GROUNDBREAKING" à la Miranda Priestly.

Coleen H.

Ok, but here are you buying these fresher beans???

Katheryn Lauer

You are perfection, your opening is so on point and thanks for getting it all out there. Your voices are my comfort background noise - all while feeling more informed! Thank you!! Stay strong, take care.

In1derland77

Where do you get these $4 fresher beans? Please spill your beans, Aubrey! 🫘🫘🫘

Emily Wish

Dan Beuttner—the original Bean Dad.

Krystal

the last time i made tacos, i added like half a can of black beans, which also helped enrich the flavor, if that helps!

Nina VanHeeswijk

so, an emotional vampire, basically? 😅

Nina VanHeeswijk

after listening to the opening, i want to thank y'all for your sincerity and transparency re: how fucking awful everything feels right now, bc it really helps me remember that we are not alone. 💜

Nina VanHeeswijk

I had this exact same thought! There are people who say roasting broccoli takes away it's nutrients!

Althea Greene

I think Kaiser Permanente did a commercial a while back highlighting the longer life expectancy of people there.

Rachael Rothrock

Anyone else take the True Vitality Test and get almost exactly the same results as Aubrey??

Rachael Rothrock

I do think positivity and/or some kind of stress reduction helps health; that said, the longest lived relative I ever had (a few days short of 99) was an emotional and logistical leech. She was super negative but mainly to manipulate others. I bet that helped her, too. And I can’t recommend that pathway. Gahhhh.

Laurakeet

Aubrey drop your favourite ways to eat beans! I want to eat more of them but don’t have ideas beyond soups and bean salads.

Chloé SA

Friend of the pod Queen Carly

Lauren Bickel

Inspired.

Jackson

I’d like some pics and a bean cooking tour from Aubrey. Show me your pantries

Demetria Johnson

I was born in Loma Linda, at the University Medical Center. It’s famous for the first inter-species heart transplant on a baby girl using a baboon heart. It was a pretty big story in the 80s. My mom ended up in an elevator with the doctor who performed it before giving birth to me and was starstruck lol. So bizarre to me that Loma Linda is a Blue Zone. Like who even knows Loma Linda besides the baboon heart transplant?!

Cori Bogle

"Demonizing pasteurization is so weird, no one is saying heating food makes it lose its nutrients" Oh Mike hasn't heard of the raw vegans. Nothing over 80 degrees F (yet somehow they're totally fine with dehydrated foods)

Melissa Seidl

I was thinking he must finally not be ill so he's feeling good

Melissa Seidl

Mike, I think you can do just about anything, but you’re going to need a music tutor if you get into pop music 😝

gretchen anderson

I'm only like 10 minutes in but I want to clarify that the HPV vaccine does NOT prevent all cervical cancers and people still need to get pap smears. It's an important distinction. I wouldn't want people not getting that checked because they got vaccinated. It keeps being called the cervical cancer vaccine but it's not 100% accurate.

heathermama7

hearing you guys do your leftist caveats at the front and also have it be about how everything is more terrible than usual was v comforting thanks!

Maya

But what if I got the bees 🐝 to spit directly into my tea 🍵 in the morning?

Rhianna79

I hear Aubrey's voice when I read TRULY GROUNDBREAKING. lol

Kathleen Wynd

You two crack me up! I could listen to you talk about anything

Sarah Sullens

100%

Lauren Milton

I love you people* (as I have come to know you through your podcasts and other media) and I share your despair and really, really appreciate your work- and your humor and your caring. Together we resist: laughing, crying and learning as we go💖 *not trying to parasocially creep though!!!

Tiaragram

Yep, double-checked the colour wheel (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_wheel), that would be either a yellow zone or an orange zone 😀 If you can drag Sir Isaac Newton into it then it must be science, right?!

RFB

As someone who has family in Albert Lea, MN, the idea of that place being a healthy, thriving place for its residents is a joke.

Brandi Alyce

Why does Dan Beuttner speak with the same cadence as Bill Nye. YOU CANT FOOL ME JUST BY SPEAKING TO MY CHILDHOOD. He seriously sounds like he watched Bill Nye videos and imitated him. Yall mentioned the way he communicates…but yeah, his tone. So strange but idk if anyone else hears it too !

Pentaxjane

I find it frustrating that whenever people talk about how great caregiving at home is for older folks, there isn’t also an accompanying discussion about the caregivers, the toll caregiving takes on mental and physical health, and how those caregivers are predominantly women. (Not to mention the lack of support for caregivers in the U.S.)

Juliana

Oh man I had to take one of those longevity calculator things as part of a health class once AND IT ALSO TOLD ME TO DRINK ALCOHOL

Emily Rose Alvo

Okay, I'm really frustrated about the Albert Lea segment (not with you, just in general). It's extremely widely known that a major issue throughout Minnesota (I'm sure other places too, but I'm from MN) is that access to health care outside metropolitan areas is increasingly restricted. For context, the two large cities in Minnesota are Minneapolis and Saint Paul, but outside the Twin Cities metro area, the next largest city is Rochester, MN. In Rochester (where I'm from), Mayo Clinic is the largest employer and employs 42k people. The next largest employer, the school district, employs less than $3k people. Mayo Clinic is a self-insured health plan and only considers their own facilities in network. This means if you want to see a GP in Rochester--the third largest town in Minnesota--and you got your insurance through Mayo (which a very high percentage of residents do), you're likely looking at 2-3 months wait. And that's still in an actual city of about 125k--it gets worse in smaller communities. For example, Mayo Clinic is a major health care provider in Albert Lea and they've cut back what services they provide at that location over time (though I don't know what the situation was like in 2013. At any rate--it's simply not credible to me that they could have been doing this blue zone work in Minnesota and NOT realized that there was a major systemic issue around health care access in smaller communities In Minnesota. The fact that there's no acknowledgement of that really makes it hard for me to give any credit for good faith since I think you'd have had to actively ignore the issue.

Elizabeth Sullivan-Burton

Great episode, I had to go to this test though. I also need to start drinking, and I need to become religious. I’ve also got a bad attitude 🤣🤣🤣

Debbie Wedge

I almost threw my phone across the room at "Gru Zones" 😂

M J Hall

"I just don't know what to do, and I feel bad and scared." Yep. 100. Every day.

Kimberly TT

At a Meet Your Candidates event in Salt Lake City, one candidate for something lost my vote because she was like, “Have you heard of Blue Zones? Let’s make Salt Lake City a Blue Zone!” First of all, there is no political will to improve our air quality, which is actively killing people. But it took all of my self control to not shout “blue zones were debunked! It was bad record keeping and pension fraud.”

Sky Hatter

imo engaging with disinformation through an intersectional lens-- regardless of how lighthearted the engagement is-- is still a powerful political statement! thank you for continuing to share your work even though we're living in hell

adri

it’s always “eat a sweet potato and walk up a hill,” and never “regulate environmental pollution and address wealth disparity”

Krystal Hooper

ZINC MENTIONED

Sam Holtzen

Omg that intro. Did Mike finally try cocaine?

Desiree Leadbetter

I definitely feel sad and scared (although trying to channel it into community and activism). Thank you for sharing important knowledge while also providing some levity. A Bean Off would be epic!

Julia

the 'bleu' zones killed me.

Heather Gardiner

I need a whole episode of Aubrey talking about her fancy beans and she cooks them.

Laura PC

Not gonna lie - I was pretty upset Aubrey didn't declare herself the Bean Queen. And I know I'm the wrong person to make a joke about the flicking thereof, so I will leave it to more capable hands.

Kevin Hengehold

This guy sounds like a late 90's issue of Natural Health Magazine shouting at me.

Leela Corman

My DELIGHT upon beholding the notification!!

Sylvia Hunter

I needed this today in the worst way - thank y'all so much. The terrible jokes and Audrey's little breaths are KEEPING ME (sort of) SANE 😆❤️ brb gonna go yell about beans

Erin

If you want to record whatever a TV do, get one of those elgato or avermedia doohickeys. They hook to your computer, they're reliable, they even come with instructions. You've got the dough.

Great Joe

Multiple minutes of Blue Zone wordplay/dad jokes was the soul balm I didn't know I needed. Thank you.

Kelly Morrell

Take a drink every time 'beans' is said.

Laura Youngblut

If Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend have been there, it’s The Who Zones

Dana Rockey

If people are constantly getting murdered with candesticks, it’s the Clue Zones

Dana Rockey

Thanks for making me yell in my shower about how I don’t guzzle an entire bottle of ketchup the day that I buy it

Nicole Jenkinson

Haven’t finished the ep yet but I’m living for the Carly karaoke

Tessa

As someone who doesn’t eat a lot of beans for no good reason, I’d now like a list of Aubrey’s top 10 ways to become a bean queen, please.

TR

Michael, there are people who think the more you heat food, the more nutrients it loses and there are some who think the best way to eat is to consume everything raw. tbc, I am not one of them but I was surprised you asserted that "nobody is saying broccoli loses its nutrients just because its warm." when in fact a lot of people say that.

Lorien Leonard

My husband is a lab scientist and they truly feel like the red-headed step child of our healthcare system

Gretchen Sprinkle

I just started the ep, but I have to comment on Michael's audio zoomies 😂 Delightful

Tea

I really mean this. I really needed to hear something lighthearted about life expectancy today as a trans dude living in America. I’m fucking absorbing huge chonk of this opposite-of-blue-zone shit. What is the opposite of a blue zone? Do we know? We could just call it OOBZ.

Jackson

Yes! They articulated how I've felt for the past month perfectly.

Allie L.

As a fellow member on Team Bean (I eat a lot of legumes), I am on Team Aubrey in the Bean-Off!!

Allie L.

The idea that $750k is able to cover much of any amount of infrastructure improvements is so fucking laughable. They're doing a road diet/bike lane project on my street (which I'm SO stoked about) and the cost is 2.8 million for a relatively straightforward project. Another road nearby that's about two miles long just had a public information meeting about proposed sidewalk additions/traffic calming measures and the estimated cost for it is 12-15 million because of things like drainage issues. (Thankfully the people at the meeting weren't balking at the cost and were instead extremely excited about the proposed improvements.) Another planned stretch of ~8 miles of 12-ft wide bike/pedestrian lanes that make sure to be completely wheelchair accessible and not share road with cars at any point is a bit over $50mil (and is part of a much larger project called the Atlantic Greenway which is intended to extend most of the length of the east coast). Even for something as small-scale as a single county, $750k is so little money, especially when talking about infrastructure.

Mikah

I want an episode fact checking Aubrey's bean pantry 😂 what are your sources? Was it a small bean village in the Philippines but it's actually incest?

Starfang

I'm not sure how Mike captures audio usually, but it's possible to take screenshots and full videos with sound of Netflix content if you watch it in the browser on a PC. It might work too on a Mac, but can't test that. For videos, hit Windows Key + G to bring up the game bar overlay and then you can click the capture button to record your full screen. The recorded videos are stored into the This PC\Videos folder.

Evan Sweeney

I needed this. Michael’s soliloquy about how he’s feeling about tuning out from the news and dealing with distractions really spoke to me

Sophia

I think he was insulted to hear that people listen to his shows at 2x speed.

Evan Sweeney

I was SO READY for Aubrey to say she was the Bean Queen.

Sean Kufel

I work in demographic research (and am permanently not healthy bc of chronic illness) and just yesterday heard a talk about how difficult and ambiguous measures of healthy life expectancy are. So even though it is important in my opinion to shift the focus away from mortality or life expectancy as the only relevant measure, the quiz in the end telling Aubrey her expected remaining healthy life expectancy was 6 months is so strange ^^

Gwen

The wellness life prediction from Aubrey was the perfect way to end the episode

Ellen

the energy from literally second 1 is so worth the money i have spent being subbed to this

lesbian deanna troi

Yes, please watch the Belle Gibson Power Hour so we don't have to!

Sara Amorosi

I came here specifically for pics of Aubrey's bean pantry and sad that they are nowhere to be found 😢

Nomi Storm

The bean convo has me 😂

Brynn

'Be normal about a place that people live' OMG! Also, did Mike have a lot of coffee before recording? Love. It.

justine

I'd love to see what my life expectancy is on that tool 🤣 as a fat diabetic who doesn't restrict food 🤣 I reckon I have 2 months left (I'm 31)

Lauren W

Did you know, Adventist Health purchased Blue Zones in 2020? Also, they had been working on a Blue Zone certification for development projects (in addition to cities), like Leed, so housing, senior housing, schools, businesses, resorts could be Blue Zone certified....just noting some interesting context. It is an interesting organization because they have incorporated a lot of best practice public health work in the work they've done with communities, many hospitals and community groups have paid Blue Zones to work with them to make environmental, systemic design changes. Much of their organization is focused on this community level work, but must public facing stuff is pretty individual focused and driven by charismatic wellness culture delivery.

Sondra Storm

Listening on Feb 27th and it has indeed gotten so much worse! 🙃 I heartily approve of a mix of diversion & on-topic episodes in the future.

Angie Guerra

I absolutely LOVE your laughter. I would love your take on the Netflix docuseries "you are what you eat: a twin experiment" which COULD have been cool but was instead fatphobic vegan propoganda, but perhaps I'm reading into it.

K J

Beanfluencer🤣🤣🤣❤️

sarah eaton

Hey :) I would love to hear your opinion on the new netflix show Apple Cider Vinegar! Do you think this is a good depiction of the Belle Gibson story? Love and Hugs

Lena Weber

Thank god for a new episode - I’ve missed you guys! X
