Realistic Custom Maps for ETS2/ATS
Added 2025-09-23 12:04:59 +0000 UTCI am currently working on improvements for BeamNG and after it is released I want to try creating custom maps for ETS2/ATS.
I am not talking about creating map mods inside ETS2/ATS. What I want to do is create map mods only with roads and paths inside ETS2/ATS and create/render environment in custom engine so you can drive on the roads.
Vehicles will be handled by game, they will be rendered by custom engine and environment/weather will be handled/rendered by custom engine.
I was already working on custom engine for my own game and I want to try that inside ETS2/ATS, also maybe BeamNG in the future.
Details
Custom maps mostly in forests & mountains
High quality realistic PBR assets (only vehicles from default game)
High quality realistic roads with proper data to handle rain/snow/dirt
High quality realistic weather system with a lot of dynamic elements (proper wind, rain, snow, fog etc)
4 seasons
Low view distance with high density ground fog (high view distance = lower quality graphics and high performance impact, its not worth with the current tech. I want to get most realistic high quality result)
Single lane roads only (multiple lanes are boring)
It is not possible to improve the game anymore without changing assets. Current assets are not high quality for better performance because SCS wants everyone to play the game. I just want realism. But even if all the assets changed 1:19 scaling is just bad, doesn't feel realistic at all. I think its just better to make custom maps with better assets to get max realism.

2025-10-09 18:39:06 +0000 UTCUnfortunately, with the lighting columns, no matter what we do, there is always flickering. I wonder if SCS doesn't see it and fix it? It's probably because they are very thin, like the cables. On the wooden columns where they exist, they are fine. If I could make a mod to replace these pillars I would. 😄

2025-10-05 11:46:44 +0000 UTCWow what an update the colors are just fantastic - only thing i could do with some advice a lot of the street lamps have slight shimmering probably as i have to use nvidia smooth motion to stop the stuttering - i was wondering what could i adjust in colors/Tonemap that would help tone down the shimmering ?

2025-09-27 11:32:17 +0000 UTC- Realistic Custom Maps - A high degree of realism will probably only be achievable on a small scale in terms of the map environment. In my opinion, the RPM map is a good example of something that is heading in the right direction. The main problem with RPM is that the environment is so limited that you get to know everything after a short time and you can't get beyond being a better local transport driver. I also see a problem with possible AI traffic. I hardly believe that the current skills of the AI drivers in ETS/ATS are sufficient to master the approach to the Nanga Parbat base camp in Beyond, for example, in such a way that something like a regulated coexistence between AI and human drivers can develop in such places. To be honest, however, one must also admit that even in real life, not every driver can drive properly on single-lane roads. In any case, the AI in RPM cannot do so. To create a higher degree of realism in the game, I would probably start by dealing with the morons in traffic. In my opinion, these guys lack an overview of the overall situation, as well as a realistic assessment of the speeds and directions of surrounding traffic participants and, as a result, the ability to anticipate traffic conditions. At the moment, all AI traffic in ETS/ATS drives like a hopelessly overwhelmed learner driver during their first driving lesson ;-)
