“Okay, are you ready to go over this again, Todd? We’re almost out of time, the big Homecoming game is tomorrow and you need to be prepared.”

“I guess, although I’m still pretty unclear on A. How a cheerleader knows football as well as you do, like you’ve played your whole life, and B. Why do you care so much about my performance in the game, Vanessa?”

“You’d never believe me…”

“Try me.”

“Fine, a year ago, I was the lead quarterback for this school, had my pick of any girl on the cheerleading squad, so I had Bethany, the head cheerleader. Over Thanksgiving weekend, I visited my family upstate and hooked up with one of my cousin’s friends. Nothing serious, but she was hot, I was drunk, you get the idea. Bethany turned out to be into magic and when she found out, she made it so that I’d never been anything except a cheerleader. It was only supposed to be until we won state, she wanted me to watch from the sidelines as my punishment, but it turns out that no one else at our school is good enough to win, and we didn’t even make the playoffs, let alone state. The spell didn’t take away my memories, so I still remember all the plays, but there’s no way that I can play on the team in this state, so I’ve got to impart that knowledge to the next best person, that would be you.”

“You’re right, that’s pretty hard to believe. But what do I get out of all this?”

“Apart from winning state?”

“If what you said is true, then that’ll be your trophy once the spell is broken. And I go back to being, what, second string? Winning is great, but I need more. Like a cheerleader on my arm at the homecoming dance.”

“Come on, you’re star quarterback, you could have any girl on the squad. A real girl!”

“I don’t want a real girl. I want you, Vanessa. I have since sixth grade.”

“Fine, not that you’ll remember any of this after the spell breaks, I’ll be your girlfriend.”

“Great, let’s get started, blue 42, hut, hut, hike!”

“What the hell are you doing? Get off of me!”

From the bleachers, Bethany smiled as she watched her cheating ex get playfully tackled by his new boyfriend. A few more days should be all it takes for the second spell she cast to take full effect. Not a love spell, but something to make Vanessa more open to experiencing life as a girl. Originally she was going to let him change back once he learned his lesson, but that was before Todd approached her, wondering how to get the attention of the girl who was seemingly only interested in teaching him plays. She’ll still give Vanessa the option to choose, but she thinks the choice will be very easy after what Todd told her he planned for Homecoming.
