Random Compositions 🎲

Hey Creative Coders, 👋

One of the most exciting and maybe even unsettling discoveries in the learning process of Creative Coding in Graphic Design is randomness. It allows you to let the computer make its own, unpredictable decisions. Here two worlds collide, because from a traditional design perspective we are used to have  almost full control over the things we create. Randomness can make you feel a bit unsettled and uncertain, but at the same time it reveals the  full potencial of coded design: to generate any number of variations  within a defined set of constraints. That’s really exciting.

I wrote a new tutorial about “Random Compositions”, which is usually the first assignment I give my students in my university courses.

I am currently planning to create a online-course out of this idea. So if you have any ideas how to optimize the tutorial or in which interesting directions I could go with this, let me know in the comments. You can also always send an e-mail to feedback@timrodenbroeker.de

I wish you a great weekend! I’ll get back to you next week.

Greets from Barcelona, ☀️

Well perhaps export as a PNG or a JPG file than use a 3rd party’s file conversion app such as drawingbot or plotter art

Hi Robert, that's an interesting idea, I will think about it. But one problem could be that it's not possible to convert photos into vector graphics easily with Processing. That would require a very specific technical approach that would exceed the scope of my curriculum.

I would love to see a lesson from start to finish on importing photos incorporating them into various forms of generative art, save file in different file formats (png, svg etc) . Personally, I prefer png than convert to svg layers for multiple colors in able to use plot each color separately in a ink plotter
