V1.504 - Bugfixes:
Fixed an issue that would prevent travel to a few regions such as the scientist, detective, and doctor workplaces.
Fixed make sunny button missing on terrain.
Fixed a compatibility issue between GO and the SNB Bank/Financial Center Mods that prevent NPCs being assigned to jobs.
Fixed the New Potion of Youth. It failed to appear in your Sim's inventory.
V1.501 - Compatibility Quickie:
Fixed a compatibility issue between GO and the NPCC mod causing a crash on startup.
Gameplay Overhaul grew so fast with new options that at times, players were aggravated they liked a good bit of it, but not ALL of it. So, new options were sorely needed. This is something I've wanted to do for a while. Gameplay Overhaul now has a robust options menu that will help you to trim things you don't want, and will remember your settings across different save games.
I am not putting all of the v1.5 update into early access. There are 2 versions launching simultaneously. Read on to see everything found in v1.51 with its download link and the major update v1.50. You can download the public version at the bottom of this post. or download v1.51 here!
Disabling features or setting them to the game's default will eliminate their impact on your game, much like disabling settings in the game options menu. This means if you want, you can disable career difficulty and use other mods that alter careers and do so safely.
Gameplay Overhaul begins with the majority of its features ON and starts on Medium difficulty settings, which are not hard to overcome. I believe people will enjoy the slight boost to difficulty by playing on this mode and will prefer *most* features to be on, so this is the middle ground I chose.
New Features in v1.51 - Going into Early Access

New Features in v1.50 - Public Version
You can download the public version of Gameplay Overhaul at the bottom of this post. I felt that the options menu and bug fixes are too important to hold back, if I want people to enjoy my mod... so please do! And consider supporting me if you like it!
New Feature - New Options Menu: The Gameplay Overhaul options menu got a massive overhaul of its own, listing all options in one area with explanations of what they and their settings will do for your gameplay. In addition, I've greatly expanded the list of options available to make GO a more modular experience.
New Options - Relationship Changes: If you do not want my changes to relationships, such as strangers taking heavier penalties when socials fail (family/friends do not), or strangers being less interesting to talk to (filling less social) than family/friends, or do not want my changes to gains based on Charisma, you can turn this off. This will also disable the system that compares Sim traits to determine if they have conflicting ones, which makes friendship gains slower for those Sims. (Requires Restart)
New Options - Satisfaction System: The satisfaction system that awards Sims points, or causes them to lose them, based on daily average mood has always been possible to turn off. However, I now have an additional option Sims Can Lose Satisfaction. This lets you turn off the ability for bad mood days to subtract satisfaction from your Sim.
New Options - Fishing Overhaul: Disable the fishing overhaul portion of Gameplay Overhaul, if you would prefer to use other mods to change how fishing works or do not like my own changes. This includes things like fish getting new bait, rares requiring bait, ponds being fishable in all cases, and increases to the viability of fishing as a money-maker. (Requires Restart)
New Options - Gardening Overhaul: Disable the gardening changes in Gameplay Overhaul, such as rares/uncommons spawn evenly on grafted plants, changes to the frequency of plants needing watered, and extended sprinkler ranges. (Requires Restart)
New Options - Autonomy Changes: Disable Gameplay Overhaul's list of autonomy changes, such as toddlers making messes, less celebrity hype, sims no longer viewing paintings unless at a museum, and things like that. (Requires Restart)
New Options - Fire Difficulty: Fires were set to hard by default in GO and this could not be changed. Now you can choose Easy (normal), Medium, or Hard, to make fires spread faster and in a larger radius. (Requires Restart)
New Options - Food Calories Overhaul: If you do not want all foods to have calories, turn this to off and it will disable my fix for EA's forgetfulness that calories are a thing in Sims 4. Most foods from after the base game have 0, while base game foods have tons. It's inconsistent, so I evened it out. (Requires Restart)
New Options - Fitness Basal Metabolic Rate: To counter the above, Sims can diet using Gameplay Overhaul. Without this setting, Sims lack the ability to lose weight through calorie restriction like a human and are forced to exercise to shed weight. If you don't like this change, you can turn it off. (Requires Restart)
New Options - Fitness Extends Age: Disable this if you do not want high-fitness Sims to age a bit slower. IRL, being fit expands your lifetime expectancy and this gives another purpose to the fitness skill which sorely needs a purpose other than winning pointless fights. (Requires Restart)
New Options - New Potion of Youth: The original potion of youth has been restored to the game. If you like, you can turn off my new/improved potion of youth that is more expensive but lets Sims age back down to Young Adult, much like potion of youth/ambrosia in previous Sims titles. The New Potion of Youth has had its cost cut to 3500 so you do not need to do an entire high ranking aspiration to afford just one. (Requires Restart)
New Options - Kids Bad Moods Decay Faster: A feature of GO to counter the emotional difficulty setting. Sims children can have bad moods, like a death, that persist the entire childhood and this seems wrong to me. For this reason, I gave kids a buff that doubles how fast their bad moods decay. If you don't like it, disable it here. (Requires Restart)
New Options - Automatically Purge Friends List: This isn't really new, but it's a little known feature of the mod. Turn this on if you'd like GO to occasionally eliminate all friendships that sit at 0 from your relationships panel. This may help keep that panel nice and quick in longer games. (Requires Restart)
New Options - Less Invites if Not Friends: This option can be disabled if you do not like my changes that require Sims to be at least +25 in Friendship if they are going to call to invite you to hang out. (Requires Restart)
New Options - Emotional Whim Slot: This defaults to on, because the Emotional Whim Slot is always on. What this does, is let you turn it off so that you will have 1 more regular whim slot that will offer up a more wide variety of whims. The emotional ones are very limited in scope so this was a player-requested feature. (Requires Restart)
Bug Fix - Removed the pop up when starting a new game reminding players to be a Patron. I'm sorry. It will come back in a less intrusive way in the future and not appear to be a last exception.
Bug Fix - Fixed a bug where children could not alter gameplay settings.
Bug Fix - Further lowered the likelihood children will make messes with my autonomy changes setting on.
Bug Fix - Stopped Werewolves and Celebrities (again) from spawning in as Burglars and Detectives. The game sure likes to break its own rules, sometimes!
Bug Fix - Fixed a bug where Sims would show 'Fine' while having another moodlet. This was because of hidden buffs, and lessons were learned.
Base Game Bug Fix/QoL Improvement - Fixed a longstanding bug with the base game's auto-solve motives feature (where you click the needs panel and hunger or bladder). This now lets you use this with a mixture of these auto solve and more direct actions without it throwing away what you told it to do. Also increased the range so the Sim is more likely to find something appropriate to fill a need.
Extra Details
Income
First, incomes are halved from all sources that count as income. Anything from selling a painting to career payouts and insurance payments after a fire. This is to slow down the early game and make you think about what you want to buy, and enforce some budgeting.
Bills
Bills are increased substantially, primarily via property tax. I wanted it to be this way because not everyone owns Eco Lifestyle. Rich Sims will need to keep money flowing in order to maintain their lifestyles. What's rich? Well, Bob and Eliza Pancakes' home will cost them about 8k a week up to 10k if Neighborhood Action Plans are enabled. Their default is only 4k.
Relationships
Sims will suffer heavy penalties to relationship gains and losses, but only with strangers and acquaintances. Family (not just household members) and friends will not be as heavily penalized. Sims will gain less friendship and lose more on a failed social, so don't spam them without regard for conversation tone, the emotion of your sim and the emotion of the target.
A New Purpose for Friendship
Sims don't gain much social need from Sims who are not friends or family, starting at friend and up. You'll only receive half social when talking to strangers, encouraging your Sim to socialize and maintain friendships.
Career Gains
All career gains are reduced by 40%, making it harder to get promoted in a single day. This will make reaching level 10 a bit harder, and heavily penalize your Sim when they got into work in a bad mood. You'll still gain some performance, just not very much. If you skip work, you'll lose 1.5x the usual work performance. Both the gains and losses can be offset with Logic and Charisma (read on)
Emotions
Emotions ill be a bit harder to manage, in particular on other Sims. Major life events such as divorce and the death of a loved one will have their durations tripled. All negative moodlets that are weak are twice as strong in order to overcome the massive amount of happy sources in the game. If the duration is under 6 hours, it's doubled. Those with a duration longer than 6 hours are tripled. Strong moodlets like a bladder failure have a single point added to them to make it a bit more dangerous but are not doubled thanks to player feedback.
A New Purpose for Charisma and Logic
It's a very minor thing, but Charisma and Logic are rather boring so I've given them a tiny extra feature. First, Charisma will help you to regain some of the relationship penalties. Each level will add about 2% to your gains and subtract 2% from your losses. This will not bring it to base game levels, but it'll offset those penalties a good bit.
Charisma also joins Logic in the Careers system. Having Charisma will reduce the amount of work performance you lose when skipping a day. Logic increases work performance by a couple percentage points per level, giving you some reason to bother with it.
Things I Hate
I dislike how often the game does things like sniffing with the vacuuming pack, or slipping on ice/mud. I've reduced the frequency of these events to only 25%
The camera exploit has been removed from the game and you'll lose half a point of friendship for using it because I'm a jerk. It's not a big loss if you really want to take a picture, just a slap on the wrist to let you know not to do that =)
Things YOU Hate
Sims you barely knew - and pets you were neutral toward - will no longer give a 2-day +2/3 sad debuff. This is ridiculous. My mod knocks this down to about 8 hours +1 only. It should no longer last your toddler's entire childhood if the maintenance man dies and the mod will make it hit +2 only. Previously it was hitting at 6 days for +4/+6 YIIIIKES.
Overall Goal
You will need to budget, plan, and care for your Sim's emotional state much more. In order to get rid of negative moods, you'll need to actually make use of the emotion decay activities like punching bags when angry or talking to others about how you feel in order to get rid of those negative moods. Sims you talk to are much more likely to be in a bad mood, making success rates drop and making them harder to befriend. Careers and Relationships are tougher, but investing time into logic and charisma can help reduce the difficulty a little over time.
Important Notes - Restarting Your Game for Changes to Take Effect
Nearly all of the new options will require you to restart your game to take effect. This is because a lot of changes take place during startup. Some things such as career difficulty, money, bills, and relationship difficulty can be changed on the fly but the others are too complex to bother. Simply install GO, set it up in game, restart and you're good to go.
Installation Instructions
Unzip the file and Install in your Documents/ Electronic Arts/The Sims 4/Mods folder and ensure that script mods are enabled in Game Options > Other. Please restart your game after making heavy changes to the settings on the mailbox.

If you don't want the game to be harder then this mod is likely not for you, or at least you would want to leave most of it turned off. Which you can do! thats an option!

2025-07-14 23:26:43 +0000 UTCWow, so many options and settings, I'm overwhelmed by the features this mod gives but at the same time I'm really confused, because there are so many options about things I don't really understand, I think I need to watch a video about your mod, someone who explain all the features in a video, would be great for me to understand for what i need this mod. I mean, the game is like it is. Sims loose gain friendship and charisma always helps on with friendship and I taught in careers they would also gain more points when they have more charisma. Toddlers are always making messes autonomously, this is a good option, why do the children/toddlers etc. alter the game settings? I mean, how??? How can your own playable children Sim change the game settings by its own? And / Or even NPC Kidz too? If that's true, that's crazy! Unbelievable. I don't know if I'm going to download this, I really need to watch videos explaining this mod further, there are so many options and I'm happy with the game. I just don't like the calories system the EA game has right now, the "smell dish" animation that all Sims do at the same time, oh and those pop ups from children/teenager when they go to school/highschool that their value changes (one positive, but the other negative) , is there a way to make them gain just positive things and the other could be 0, so they wouldn't loose any points. And the Young Adult + Adult Sims that go to work, I notice those pop ups which asks us things we don't know what to choose from, sometimes there is a hint highlighted in green and red, so we know which to choose from, but sometimes there is no hints at all, and those pop ups without hints - I want them to disappear! If I want to play difficult games I can still play Sims 2 or 3... But loosing points on dumb questions about the jobs (those questions doesn't make sense at all), and I'm trying so hard to win everything in one save file! Every Aspiration, every base game jobs, skills,collectibles etc. When I'm done, I play GTW, then Hobby & Business (as they are similar), and then all the other DLC's I have. I still need to play Get Together and so on, as they were released. (Sorry for the long comment) Have a nice day!

It appears to have broken the fishing system: when I catch a fish, I receive the initial notification that I’ve discovered a new type of fish(and it is recorded in the notebook), but the second notification showing the fish's weight and size doesn't appear. Additionally, the fish doesn't get added to my inventory, although other items like treasure boxes and upgrade parts are collected properly. I tried disabling the fishing overhaul by restarting the game, but nothing. When I disable your mod and restart the game, the fishing system works properly again and the fish are correctly added to the inventory. So I'm certain the issue is caused by your mod, which is a real shame, because I really enjoy it. (Note that I deleted all settings files before reinstalling the mod).

2025-03-19 20:27:45 +0000 UTCIf the Burglar update broke this mod, I suspect that the biggest fix would be making it so that the Burglar from this mod either ceased to exist or became Robin Banks and this was the way to turn off burglars altogether, or at least an alternate way to do it so we don't have to click who knows how many times through the settings; settings which aren't even very CLEAR, like with the Animal Aging. If the box is ticked off, it's green, and it's blank if it's off, right? The Animal Aging is so confusing. Not only does it ONLY apply to cows, llamas, chicks/hens/roosters, Mini Sheep and Mini Goats, but the wording of the setting is confusing too! I also wish that, should Dine Out EVER get a refresh, I hope they are smart about it, hire you and you just officially add the mod into the game, and is brought in to update it whenever you add new features, or just have remote access to the files so you can just replace the old version with the new one. And rather than them calling it "Dine Out Refresh," which sounds stupid, you insist they keep the name of the mod and announce that "Dine Out has been RELOADED for EVERYONE for FREE!" or something like that and instead of people who doesn't know much about the mod, footage of the Burger Boys are shown for the trailer for the Reload... I'll stop rambling, heh

All the options come up for me to take orders and all that but when I click them, the sim doesn't really follow through with it and it just cancels. Do you know why this could be happening? On the map, it says they do, but when I'm actually playing them, they have the option to buy a resturant and can't do anything on the premises of the one they should own. It wasn't sold as they don't have more money in their household, and now they can't afford to buy it back. I guess they've lost all of their progress? They had fully trained staff, 4 star ratings, I'd done all the menus. Can this be fixed?

The tooltip name has to be changed to 0x1259AD94 in carl:job_burglar_detective (unless they're in cahoots). And the buff reason "(from having a burglar!)" doesn't appear to show up in-game. Also, I'm currently translating the mod but I can't find the strings for the notification that shows up when the burglar is arrested anywhere in the files. Can you point me in the right direction? Thanks! :)

I have MAYBE run into an issue with this mod - the inner workings of Sims 4 is a mystery to me so I can't be sure, but I was experiencing a bug where I could only view my sim panels once and any subsequent times would cause the music to play as if I was viewing it, but the game would not pause and the panel would not show.... removing your mod seems to have fixed the issue. Just wanted to let you know because this is one of my favorite mods and I want it to be at its best! I figure something like this can easily go unnoticed as I might be the only person who looks at sim panels lmao

I go through a lot of systems in this mod so it can appear i'm a problem when I'm not, though it's hard to say without me having a look myself.

2024-02-21 17:35:15 +0000 UTCI'm not sure what's up with the mailbox re: Dine Out. I don't actually have dine out settings on it any more (or am not supposed to). I have both installed and use shift-click on the ground for dine out settings and I believe GO can be accessed the same way. You have script mods turned on ,yes? And DO is at least v3.3 while using GO v1.54. This would be the same I am using. As for the changes made, most of them are in this page just broken into the sections from when I updated the mod. I also make an effort to explain all the settings in the menu. Nearly every feature of the mod is in the menu now.

You can tell if it's working if a log file that is similar name to the mod appears in your mods folder. You should see those 2 files become 4.

2022-09-20 08:56:02 +0000 UTCHey, I don't know if this is supposed to happen but with this mod in my game my sims gets a +1 happy "New to the Neighborhood" moodlet when I start a new game. The moodlet says its from the cheerful trait but my sims don't have that trait. Thought that was super odd.

2022-08-06 15:04:42 +0000 UTCGO lite is discontinued If you set all difficulty settings to easy and disable the satisfaction system/relationship caps, you have GO lite with much more control. So you can choose what you want and do not want. I'm sorry it's annoying but it saves me maintaining too many mods and gives you much more control. Set it up this way 1x, and it will carry over between saves :) Settings also do not break on update.

I know I said before that I don't want to think about dieting more than I have to, but honestly the basal metabolic rate feature would be really useful in long games to combat the issue where active sims gradually balloon up unless they're fitness fanatics.) However, it's so large and touches so many systems that I just don't dare use it with so many other mods in my game- I did try for a time, but with GO I was experiencing more lag and dropped interactions than usual, which I suspect is due to it not playing nice with my other mods. In particular, I like how Kuttoe/SHUSHU's Keep Sims In Home Regions handles walkbys, but my understanding from the discord is that they're probably incompatible even if I don't have GO's sim filters on? It's still a very impressive piece of work, though. I feel good about being a patron seeing how much work Carl puts into the game. 💯

2022-07-12 16:01:54 +0000 UTCThis is a good collection of mods, which I can see appealing to a lot of people, and always appreciate the effort folks put into game modding. I've been modding games for many years, and understand the frustrations. I wish to offer some feedback, but please don't take anything I say as criticism, or demands, as it's neither. This is a great idea and does things in some unique ways, which of course are your preferences, but I feel it should be a collection of modular mods, similar to LittleMsSam, Kuttoe, and many others, rather than a single overhaul. A lot of these features, are already done by other mods, but in different ways. Some people may prefer how those other mods handle those gameplay aspects, and using features from this on top of mods, that people may not realise are conflicting, may produce undesirable results, which has ben my experience, sadly. It also makes it more difficult for the user to track down which mod is causing an issue, such as undesirable behaviour or lag. As an example, I'd personally like the food calorie part of the mod, without any of the other stuff I don't personally need, or be left wondering where those added interactions and objects came from, because as I said the majority of which are handled differently by other mods, so I don't really need an overhaul mod, just to get a single feature I desire (this is why I appreciate how LMS and others do it). Furthermore, I also believe all options should default off (including game bug fixes), as like me, not everyone will want all the features, especially having to launch the game first to turn them off. Lastly, it would be clearer if the menu options were more consistent, as some will say "easy" when disabled, and some will say "off". If a feature is off, it should clearly state "off", to be 100% clear to everyone; (it could even state "Off - (Easy)") Many thanks for your effort!

I don't actually know of any that outright conflict atm. In general, disable features if you want some other, more specialized mod to take over. For instance, Kuttoe's career overhaul should work with the mod if you put careers on easy. So generally, it's a matter of considering what that other mod is doing.

There is a YouTube video of some Sims doing the Tango and I thought it would be hilarious to mix that with the burglar. Like he could Tango into the house, put things in his bag, maybe even grab a sleeping Sim and Tango with them a little bit as they sleep and drool the whole time and then he swipes something and Tangos out of the house. It would be even better if Tango music was playing in the background but I'm not even sure if ANY of this is even possible. If not then I appreciate your time and once again thank you for your interest in modding and your great guides you've made! You are awesome! Also could we get the burglar part of your mod as a standalone mod by any chance?

I don't see the problem with that :( I would also really really be interested in modules if possible even behind the $5 paywall which I'm going to do because i want to support your hard work. But i truly enjoy other mods like SimRealist's SNB and Bills. I feel like my Sims careers are balanced enough i don't mind the money they make. That's just me and my playstyle though haha

I've been playing this game since the day it came out- which means I already know how I like my bills tuned, I already know how I like my careers and skills tuned, etc. I know the main balance changes can be turned off but it would be great to be able to pick and choose what parts do and don't get installed. I would hate to have to sacrifice the changes I like and have already implemented for the ones I'm not personally interested in (or for major features like dine out fixes and burglars). Plus having everything as one single mod massively increases risk of incompatiblity and means more broken stuff with updates. Please please please consider making this into individual mods! Thank you!

The only fix I found was removing this mod, which makes me really sad. It's just too much for my pc. Is there a way to make it easier for my pc to handle? I didn't have trouble before the update.

It's fun to watch your Worst Mod Ever Made video to see how far you've come in mod-making; keep up the awesome work! <3 I did come across a bug, though: my sim is doing Jungle Adventure temple runs and I was smart enough to bring a tent along this time, however the interaction Place in World on the tent does not work. The action is immediately cancelled once it comes up in the queue, no routing failures or anything. The only mod I removed was the Difficulty Mod and the interaction then worked; I also removed all my other mods and just had the Difficulty Mod and the interaction cancelled again. Not sure if it's all Place in World items, but tents for sure. Just wanted to pass what I found along; I do look forward to seeing what you add to the mod! :)

So far it's great (although I am still finding the romantic relationships a little too easy). It would be great if you could get the game script to match the changes (ie having the career information box reflect the changes in the amount being paid.)

Or exempt toddlers from all relationship boosts, as unlike children and adults they don't have a way to actively work it down? My toddlers have a +6 sad because a repairman they never met died on their lot....it's lasting for 6 days, their entire toddlerhood! No biggie, just thought I'd make that request, thanks for making this!

2021-11-09 20:52:06 +0000 UTCCarl, have you considered editing the skill XML yet? In looking into it, I found that fire skill chance only has 3 tiers instead of changing with individual skill levels. I also found immunity to fire at level 1, and blacklist and whitelist entries that led to immunity and a further long (48h) period of immunity after a fire. If you want to add further complexity, that might be an idea.

2021-11-08 09:29:47 +0000 UTCI've been testing a bit: if I only got this mod in everything runs smoothly. Once I put MC Command center in I'm getting this bug (I removed all other mods and cc). I tried deleting my MC command settings, which did not help and I repaired my game, also with no effect. 2021-11-07 14:26:10 +0000 UTCI'm having some trouble with the mod: my households aren't always loading and I just now wasn't able to switch between sims in my household. It also doesn't save! (|Although I don't get any errors, my save file just doesn't get updated) I do have other mods. Any tips on how to trouble shoot this? Or are there any know mods that conflict with this one? I do really love the idea of this mod! The sims is way too easy :)

I've just made relationships take a bit longer to build, and negatives take more. I will absolutely be digging deeper as you recommend. I'm just gettin' started and laying the ground work :)

2021-11-05 00:17:59 +0000 UTCNot to be negative - but I will explain: The MCCC can cover some of this mod, and Meaningful Stories can also do this - but I appreciate the effort in a complete effort to tune the game to feel more realistic. But, I think the game should have more gameplay to offset the ease of selling skill items and lacking ability to manage your money or bills. (Not every sim is a Grinder!) Modding the bills and expenses to be more well-defined, or the ability to save and earn capital gains would be a lot nicer than flat cuts and boosts to earnings and expenses. After toying with both MCCC and Meaningful Stories - I can say they have that part covered very well and users should use those to fine-tune economics and emotions. But what else could you do? There's a lot of vectors for balance in the game. Time for each action, time lockouts for taking certain actions, introducing small things (Savings and interest!) or introducing new random events that introduce a little danger or risk or misfortune can do a lot. Keep working hard! Someone has to dig very deep into the game, and I think you can do it! Keep working on this mod!
