With 13 Oscar nominations, Emilia Pérez is the most critically acclaimed film of the year. According to current rhetoric about “the importance of representation in media”, such attention being given to a film about a trans woman should be a watershed moment. But it’s… decidedly not.

Today, trans media critic (as in, media critic who is trans, not critic of trans media — though today, she is both) Fran Tirado breaks down the most bizarre film conundrum of the year and asks the hard questions: is it the responsibility of queer people to venerate every piece of media that “represents” us? What if the piece of media is bad? What if the people who created it don’t live up to pedestal “representation” put them on?

Late to the game in watching this one but I'm glad this confirms that I should never watch Emilia Pérez. This examination, plus the "Law & Order: SVU directed by Ryan Murphy" descriptor, really paints a picture lol

As soon as the first dance number started I stopped that movie and never watched it, extra glad I didn’t after all of this 😭

I’m glad the Emilia Perez now cannot be talked about without mentioning Katya… the ultimate twist of when she couldn’t stop taking about the movie 😂

The thing about Hispanic Day is that Día de la hispanidad is one of the names they give it, but it's not a day to celebrate the people who speak Spanish. It's actually the National Day of Spain, or Día de la Raza, as it used to be called (day of the Spanish race... i...), which basically celebrates the "discovery of America" by Columbus, because of the impact that had on the Spanish empire. This is why (along with other reasons) a lot of leftists in Spain refuse to celebrate our national day. I think in USA it's called Columbus day actually, it's the 12th of October.
