I got surprised when you called it out so early, I think the first time I watched the series I only figured out around the same time as Roshi (but I was just a kid). Just wait till Goku finds out (ok, no wait, I'm aware that this post is several months old, but I hope you get what I mean).

For whatever reason, the initial Kai release only covered the first two. For those, it trimmed the episodes so that they are very close to the manga. I don’t remember anymore if Z’s pacing was as bad as the OG show’s, because I only watch Kai nowadays. My guess is, yes, but I’m glad you asked anyway. Maybe someone who actually watched Z fully can chime in on YouTube.
