Poll on Unbiased Reviews

Hey Masters, so as you know I experimented with a fictional topic on the last vid, the videogame Morrowind. I wanted to explain the rationale and gather some vital input if you'd like to share any.

As I said in the vid's pinned comment, I got compelled to try fiction after the Israel vid got Age-Restricted. Sadly that is an ever looming reality and threat any video that takes an "Unbiased" take on any serious real issue is prone to. Age-Restriction alone both demonetizes and nukes a video's visibility for those unaware. The restriction was later removed, but no explanation was given. Its hard to live of off making videos if at any time a month's worth of work can be randomly deprived in an instant without any control.

In a way, it leaves me choosing between either living with this threat, or abandoning my kind of "unbiased" humour. Both outcomes are rather crap, so I saw a potential opportunity with fictional topics.

With Morrowind's Unbiased Review I was able to worry far less about threading a line over what can, and cannot be joked about, and opens windows to many topics. From other games like Warhammer 40k or Witcher, to series like Game of Thrones, movies like Star Wars, LOTR, and even anime like Attack on Titan, shows like Avatar, and so on. Just giving examples.

It was very fun and liberating making Morrowind's vid, both because of the increased creative freedom and cause Morrowind, like other fictional topics, fits well within a partisan analysis. And in the end what drives me most is making videos that I myself would love to watch, hoping others will to.

That said hope isn't enough. The Morrowind video, at the time of this post is doing fine, but I would need to hear if my donators, the big reason why I'm able to work on this, would at all be interested in more Unbiased Reviews in the future. If so, I'd be re-establishing the voting for videos topic's which we had going in the past, but it will be far more frequent, with each video standing on its own. I still love history and both could and would make more Unbiased History. As for Unbiased Reviews, the plan is to leverage their advantedge to post more frequently, my ideal goal being between ever 3 to 4 weeks. Might take some getting used to, though.

Post your thoughts here, I'll read them all and reply as best I can.

Thanks.

Just been thinking about how awesome an unbiased Trojan War would be.

Duke Skibbington

‘Byzantium’ is Rome

Andronikos_Superfan

Unbiased for me only worked with rome. Anything that comes after just feels cynical, like a sequel for the sake of a sequel without any other reason to be made. If it were up to me I'd be experimenting with new content and artforms and not try to recatch Romes lightning in a bottle again.

Emperor Claudius

Unbiased review was amazing video

Lesser606

It works for comedy too. Defenestrations was very comical and telling it through the perspective of Hus made it even better. That said, I know it's all a lot of work so I don't mind seeing your reviews from time to time when you feel like you need something easier and quicker.

Duke Skibbington

Wonderful comment. In the Latter half of the Roman series, and entire Byz mini series I did focus a lot more on the tragic nature of events from a roman perspective, and to achieve that I did focus a lot on characters and the individual journeys each had that influenced the overall narrative. It came at huge cost of time and effort, but it was my mission to portray that narrative that way until the end. While I'm trying to focus more on comedy, as I did in the earliest videos, I will try to take your point to heart. See if I can integrate it in future vids.

The reason I loved Unbiased History (excluding the Israel one, which I liked but not as much) was never the chads and wojaks, never the memes, the references to the current era, not even the cunning use of historical perspective. I loved all of those but they're not the standout. No, what I love about your channel is that you tell us the story of a nation through the eyes of a historical figure. History is dry if you summarise events but you make us care by putting us in the shoes of people who suffered and triumphed throughout it. You have main characters! The Third Century episode would not have packed a punch at all if you didn't put us in the shoes of its heroes. We would not care about the Sassanid triumph if you didn't put us in the shoes of Gallienus losing his Dad and his sons and later his own life. What would Palmyra and Gaul matter if you didn't make us empathise with Claudius Gothicus as he tried in vain to hold the empire together? The triumph we felt as Byzantium beat the Persians and the grief we feel knowing they'll be overrun by the Arabs wouldn't have been there at all if you didn't make us care about all the sacrifices Heraclius made. The fall of Rome wouldn't have stung if you didn't make us grieve for Stilicho (which I must say, is your best episode from a "main character" perspective). The Defenestrations works because it is the story of Jan Hus. The Israel video lacked that. It was more of a video summary of a wikipedia article with some zest in it. I don't care so much if you use chads and wojaks, cartoons that resemble the characters, or even their heads plopped on stick figures (ok that would kinda suck). I just want the main characters back.

Duke Skibbington

Yeah 19 episode series would be incredibly difficult so a few shorter series so a shorter (maybe 5 episode) series would be nice. Maybe something like "Unbiased History of the Trojan War" there's enough meat in the Iliad to make a few half hour episodes but not so much that it'd take you a year. Maybe a few one-off episodes too like the Defenestrations (but a touch longer).

Duke Skibbington

While unoriginal, this style of videos can be quite fun if you search for obscure enough subjects. As of now, it is literally a rebranded Ssethzeentach video. We still love your work, but you can do better.

The Rook

There are plenty if insane historical periods. If you want to make fun of Catholic Church just research Saeculum obscurum, known as pornocracy. You can't make even half of that shit up!

Claus001

I kinda miss the meme chads and wojacks, it made your videos feel like series, even the short ones like defenestrations of prague, and the serious tones you'd add were very compelling (legit I almost cried with the fall of rome). It's because seeing videos through the scope of characters we can follow feel more personal to a certain point. But I still enjoy your new videos (the israel one was hard to follow as it's a topic I know little to nothing about, but the morrowind one was amusing as heck). In fact, some of your videos (more specifically the byz arc) inspired me on the fantasy game I'm making. Because even if it was satire/parody, you did make a lot of amazing payoffs, foreshadowing, etc, that any great series/shows should have. Seeing Orestes pushing down remus after watching the fall of rome was a huge mind-blowing moment. It gave a whole different meaning to "And having betrayed civilization a long time ago" and made the naming of Romulus Agustulus have a greater significance and impact. It would be fun to see some "unbiased history" on fictional worlds, like St. Alessia's liberation of Cyrodiil and the extinction of the Ayleid elves in the elder scrolls. Either way, I'm happy with any type of 'unbiased' content, reviews, history, etc. I think it's the ruthlessness that makes your vids great.

Roman Arriaga

I think not limiting yourself to history is a great way of attracting new viewers to your channel and help it grow. It's also, like, an artistic option for you too, man, if you wanna do it and you feel inspired then go for it, don't limit yourself by what you did in your past. Just make sure to make an Unbiased History of Brazil to tell the epic of Dom Pedro II in the way it deserves to be told one of these days, pretty please.

Alexandre Kerscher

I like the idea of doing unbiased videos on fictional empires of video games, like the Third Empire of the Elder Scrolls, and the Imperium of Man of the Warhammer 40k.

Jose Hernandez

I liked the Morrowind video. And I like the idea that your considering 40k videos too. That universe is perfect for your type of dark humour and Unbiased content.

Merlin

You could do shorter videos like the Defenestrations of Prague about specific events or smaller nations without the granduer of Rome. Everything said thusfar I second.

Johnny Jhonson

Morrowind video is pretty nice, although I much prefer the Israel one due to its being more energetic and... dunno, fun? I also don't mind some fiction from time to time, but history is what I came here for. I like Sseth, but I don't want to subscribe to more than one (MaxOr is a bit different story).

Fluffy Beaver

40 minute episodes or into the tiber river with you!

Andronikos_Superfan

I thought the new vid was fantastic. It works flawlessly with your style and I *need* more.

Khantemplative

I think that it was fine and I certainly enjoyed the Morrowind episode. However, it is not something that I would want to see on a too much regular basis. Then again, try to see where your focus and inspirations lie, because those aspects are important when trying to make quality content.

Fikret Bašić

I liked the 'real life' of things, but the energy of Rome and Israel vs Byzantium is just night and day. Id like some sort of balance between your morrowind energy and the energy from real life events, since very few people are doing that right now.

benjamin Wheeler

I see. The lack of long form series on singular countries is mostly due to difficulty, if I had to guess. I know for sure I couldn't do another full on 19 ep series of 40 min vids on another country again. Its exhausting, takes everything from someone, specially if that someone is essentially working alone on everything. I understand the frustration of not getting more of something you found entertaining.

Dovah

I like the style, but have not played morrowind.

Biggus Nickus

I'd prefer more short form unbiased history like the defenestrations vid. The new video was admittedly a bit slow to get through and i think if anything this style of editing works better with history content if you're not gonna be high energy with it.

Jamie the Moneymaker

always been a massive fan of the rome series, but your style applied to GOT could be real fun

AzzaRudders

For me it was the series format. There are very few YouTube channels that cover the chronological events of a country. Many will cover the big events and historical figures but not the full history of a country. On top of that your blending myth and fact in a satirical way makes for good storytelling.

ReturnOfTheTsar

I didn't understand the vid even after multiple replays, but I can see your passion for this project. With that said, I def want to see an unbiased Eldia akin to your Rome series with Chads , Virgins, and what not but with your updated humor.

Abin Jaimon

I really liked the true, but unconventionally presented perspectives that subvert expectations in a good, but not awful game of thrones/star wars way. Your animation skills have also developped really well, so it makes sense to implement them

Andronikos_Superfan

Good hearing from you Tsar. I curious though, what was it in the Roman/Byz videos that you liked most? You mean the Series format? The meme animation? The more serious tone? I can adress some thoughts I have on each.

Dovah

I'm admittingly not a fan of the new SSeth style but at the end of the day you should make what you enjoy. I just hope that you continue making Unbiased History videos as that was what made your channel stand out from the rest.

ReturnOfTheTsar

The Bible unbiased (roman) style.

Hængeklumpen

Very important point. I have some strong thoughts on this whole experimental phase compared to the traditional animation i've made so far but I'm still formulating some important thoughts. Hopefully soon(ish) I'll make a post addressing your precise concerns.

Dovah

second this

Hængeklumpen

Oh yeah, forgot to post on Patreon... My bad. And yes the editing is very much inspired on Sseth's and Max0r's rapidfire editing, and i do want to forge something more of my own. With the focus more on being Partisan I'm certain I'll get there with enough experience.

Dovah

I don't like this new style of videos. I can watch sseth if I want to. Your unbiased history was unique and that made me support you.

Shunja776

Also, how come it was posted to youtube with no notification on patreon?

Andronikos_Superfan

It was good, but I hope you find a more unique style, it felt like a ssethtzeentach video. Which is good, but you know

Andronikos_Superfan

I love your sense of humour and I have watched you for years now. I loved the history videos but the nature of YouTube unfortunately will never give that type of content a solid ground to stand on. As long as you are happy and can make a living, I’m happy with whatever you choose to do.

Alex Andersson

Both the last videos were cool. Keep ar it champ!

Nightberry

We need a god damn 40k Unbiased History, Rome style. It would fit so well in a world of Gigachads and chaos entities

Edward_Boss

Anyone who doesn't want more unbiased reviews is an n'wah
