Noclip 2.0 - The Future of Noclip

YOUTUBE LINK: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNM89N2Wzfw

Hey folks,

Two years ago I pitched many of you an idea about crowdfunded video game documentaries. Thanks to you we've spent the past 24 months filming stories about games development and releasing them for free on our YouTube channel.

It's been an incredible two years and we've achieved everything we set out in that original pitch. So, I've got a new one...

I want to grow this channel to create more documentaries, on more games. I want to do work on areas of cultural importance to the industry. Develop new ways of filming. Stay at studios longer. Tell stories about closed studios and older games. I want to take all we've learned from the past two years and set a new creative target for Noclip to aim towards.

That benchmark is Noclip 2.0

I've been terrible at asking for funding. I sort of hate doing it. Since the launch of Noclip I've never made a video explicitly asking the over 333k YouTube subs to jump over to Patreon, and I'm proud that regardless of that we've been able to have a pretty consistent level of income. However over the coming year we're going to work to increase our baseline patronage and reach funding goals that will allow us to do new types of work.

A breakdown of these goals can be seen in the video and on our Patreon homepage. These goals are all things I want to do with this channel - important areas of discovery such as historical documentaries and embedded documentaries. But to do them to the level of quality we demand would require us to take the foot off the gas a bit and save a  bunch of our cash. We already do that behind the scenes too much, and have a number of longer-running productions, but with more funding we could execute these new ideas with the same frequency you've come to expect from us. Actually, even faster.

I want folks to watch the video as I think I make a better case for it there. So please, check it out, let me know what you think and tell me your dreams for the future of this channel.

The past two years have been the most professionally rewarding of my life, and I have no doubt that Noclip is going to be part of my life for another ten years and more. The question is how far can crowdfunding take us.

So let's find out. Together.

Your friend,

Danny

2.0! Man, all I respect your drive to always innovate and push the boundaries of this project. Rock on and know that we’ll be there for a ride!

Just signed up. I couldn’t be happier to contribute—I’m a documentary fiend and I love my games and game history, so this was an easy decision. My name in the credits is just a bonus. :) Cheers, and best of luck!

25K! Wuhu!

Just restarted my $5 pledge. Hoping to help hit 2.0!

Hey Danny, upped my pledge from $2 to $5. I know it's an extremely meager sum, but I hope it helps! I'm honestly thrilled to see you responding to feedback about doing documentaries on things like classic games, closed studios and more difficult subjects like media coverage, workers rights', etc. That's really, really awesome! It's exactly the kind of content I've been hoping to see more of from Noclip, and I'm thrilled to see it's in the works. But, that said, on the other side of the coin, I have some really serious concerns about you doing embedded coverage within a studio during a game's development. The main reason I'd like to see you get away from this sort of thing has to do with your ability to be critical of your subject. With a closed studio, the people involved a free to speak much more candidly about the work they did and the conflict they faced. But with an active studio working on an unreleased game, that isn't the case. Employees are unlikely to be critical of their employer or their workplace because, simply, they want to keep their jobs. Marketing and PR departments won't be too thrilled with you if your documentary exposes deeply rooted problems with pay equity, workplace harassment, precarious employment, etc. As such, while they're eager to work with you now, it's obvious that a documentary that addresses these potential problems you might uncover along the way will scare away future opportunities for access. None of this is meant as a criticism of your integrity or your intentions. I absolutely believe you are sincere about not allowing game studios influence your coverage. But, despite your best intentions, it's ultimately the nature of the beast. Which, to bring it full circle, is exactly why I think the best way forward is to move away from working directly with game studios and instead focusing more on subjects where that pressure and potential for disaster won't be an issue. You may not consciously be allowing them to influence your creative process, but that influence could still be happening in ways you may not even realize, if the entire documentary is told from only the perspective of the game studio itself. In any case, you said that doing more critical documentaries on closed studios and more challenging subjects is more expensive, so I've upped my meager pledge if it will help you move in that direction! All the best to you and the family Danny! Remember to take the time you need to stay healthy, physically and mentally!

I have doubled my sub as well. Not much but every little bit helps as they say. I think the most important focus is showing a game being made from start to finish, or even a trimmed down version of what the process actually looks like to make a game. This will do 2 things to better the industry: 1.) This will make the common customer more aware of what it takes to make a game, and hopefully with proof stop some of these terrible youtubers who slam devs for being lazy. 2.) Will increase general awareness of working conditions and crunch, which seriously needs to be looked at. Making games is hard. And the public needs to know. Obviously doing this stuff would be very time consuming and hard, and I have no answer on how to do it. But we must find a way. I think it is the most important thing we can do for the games industry as a whole. And who knows, maybe even improve the general attitude and culture of gaming. Thanks for your work guys, I love what you do.

Danny, have you considered adding any additional tiers to the patreon?

Jeff Ullrich

Hey Danny, more than happy to bump it up. Thank you so much for delivering--I feel you're already going above and beyond my wildest expectations--so this 2.0 effort looks to be very exciting. I'm amazed and also saddened by what you have to turn down; it's a testament to the quality of your output. Keep up the good work, but please don't burn yourself out!

I'm only a small contributor, but if my willingness to add some more money to the tin says anything, I hope it highlights how much I enjoy noclip's work, how high the quality of the work is, and mostly how much I trust Danny and the team to deliver. May 2019 bring you well earned success.

Jason

Let’s make this happen, Danny and the NoClip Crew! Just jumped onto the $5 Tier — you are among the most worthwhile and tireless creatives out there, and you’ve chosen to honour and uplift the medium/artform that I resonate with most (and have shaped my life around showcasing and celebrating), and that will always, always garner my support :) Thank you so much for being who you are, and doing what you do! With ever-enduring support, Albert (Interactive Artistry)
