Is the Holosun DRS-TH (thermal) better than the DRS-NV (IR)?

Holosun has finally released their DRS-TH, which is a combination red dot and thermal sight. We previously reviewed the DRS-NV and really liked it, but most of the viewers expressed greater interest in the TH (thermal). We've finally been able to purchase one, and this is our thorough review (and comparison) of the DRS-TH vs the DRS-NV.

Is the Holosun DRS-TH (thermal) better than the DRS-NV (IR)?

Keep in mind using IR digital night vision, if you plan on using it against individuals who may also have NVGs, this will look like a flashlight illuminating from your gun under NVGs. In a typical home defense situation where it's a couple of ne'rdowells(sp?) Then it's a stellar advantage at night in your dark home. I don't know how Thermal works though but I imagine it's quite different.

Would be nice to figure out how to rig an eye cup to that thing

I am not sure how useful this is, but here's a tiny bit of the DRS-TH "outline" mode: https://youtu.be/uxK0VCGPtS0

Excellent discussion of the trade-offs between the 2. My only question is: What does our favorite xenomorph, The Sinister, er Sinistral Rifleman look like in NV and TH?

Jason

There's an opportunity for a Predator inspired mud test here. How much cool mud will it take to hide a human's thermal signature? 😃

commandZee

Yea, same thoughts here. I was thinking "huh, Bindon aiming with NV on non-dominant eye + thermal"

Ezri

I think the only circumstance that you missed in your evaluation, that not everyone would necessarily understand: being outside and looking into a structure through a window would only work with IR.

I'm not in any kind of situation to buy either one of these, but I still really appreciate the discussion on pros and cons IR vs thermal that you brought to the table. It's something I've never really thought much about, but it's an interesting topic! I feel like you have a really hard time putting out content that's not worth watching, even if the material subject of this video is way beyond my circumstances. Great job, as always! :)

Great video and information, glad you spent the extra $. I can't wait to see you use this in future videos.

When you said $1800 on the credit card, I got second-hand financial anxiety. It's amazing how much even as a Patreon supporter the financials of running a YouTube channel are pretty abstract only to then be suddenly very real

GreenRuin

I would think they will combine the nv and the thermal very soon in one package. what is as a standalone version very impressive small allready as it is now. remember the first GIANT HUGE laser sights in the 80s. this one package thing is clearly the future. where it will be allowed. prohibited here as weapon dedicated. wonder why...

Compromises and trade offs. Nothing is for free. Very informative comparison.

Given how well TH sees through smoke, we need to see a black powder muzzle loader equipped with the DRS-TH.

Yep, I was sort of musing while watching, it was nice to see that we came to the same conclusions

That's my conclusion at the end of the video :)

I saw something that throws gas into the debate . https://shop.shinenyx.com/

I think in general, NV is better for navigation and traversal, and thermal is better for target acquisition and engagement, especially on warm targets, and especially at distance. Ideal setup IMO would be a helmet mounted NV monocular for moving, and weapon mounted thermal for target spotting and engagement.
