I can relate to this feeling, because cheap books pretty much do not exist in New Zealand outside the biggest cities, and it's hard as hell to find genre fiction by British or American authors.

Charing Cross? One of the very few places in the world I had that experience.
(I mean, I love shopping for old books. But Charing Cross is one of the few places with many good stores next to each other, with good selection for cheap, so I'd have that “problem” to worry about.)
