To me, the first 3 seasons of Buffy explore the events and horrors of high school, the later Buffy episodes deal with moving into adulthood, and Angel is about life in Los Angeles. Not the sunny, glamorous tourist Los Angeles, but the one many of the residents deal with -- dark, dangerous, superficial and soul-crushing.

I quite like this episode also. It is pretty comical but the bit with Dennis' mother walling him up alive is also very dark. The mix between comedy and pretty dark stuff is a key element of the show so it is logical we see that early into season 1.
What I like with characters in ATS is they all have a past and they all have to reconcile their past with the life they want to live and with the person they hope to become. It is an important theme in a show that deals with adult characters (even if Cordelia is still very young). I think everyone reaches a point in their life when, looking back at how we behaved or how our life didn't go the way we planned or even wanted, your past and present selves must confront each other. Either you are prepared to change your ways to become a better person (or a worse person if it's your life goal) or you just stand still and nothing will change except becoming even more bitter and resentful.
Of course you can't change everything around you. There are some things you can't even change about yourself but you can always try to be a better you. Angel is trying and I think Cordelia and Doyle are on the same path even if they didn't make the choice consciously.
BTVS and ATS are character-driven shows and the 22 episodes per season format is the best one for these kind of shows. One of the quality that is always mentioned with both shows is the evolution of the characters. When you will reach later seasons and look back at how some of the characters started off, I think you will be amazed.
Thanks again Tyler for your commentaries and, until the next time, take care of yourself.
