Adolescence Episode 1

Tons to unpack in this show - and lots already unpacked in this episode! This is absolutely a show with difficult, nuanced conversations to be had, and I definitely think that by spending time in this episode focusing on the dad's reaction, they're inviting the audience to ask those tough questions about where, if Jamie did it, that attitude and idea of masculinity came from. Glad you weren't spoiled on the one-shot aspect of the show!

Perfect show to get your reactions to Tyler. You understand the nuance and I hope people don't take things out of context. My view personally with this stuff is that I never expect a victim, or people directly connected to a victim, to to extend empathy or forgiveness. They're more than entitled to every emotion they feel even if that's rage filled and wanting of retribution but the systems we have in our society and our collective mentality must be more objective and should fundamentally strive for the most idealistic outcome that reduces harm on every level. When we look at adults that have committed heinous crimes and our collective response is that they should just be locked up forever we are just skirting responsibility and reinforcing the idea that people are either born or not with the capacity for that violence not accounting for other factors at play and they are irredeemable and I think that makes it incredibly hard for people to look at children committing crimes and think anything other than their future is a forgone conclusion. In every case but particularly the case the show present it should be seen as a intervention point. Even if this kid didn't do it the circumstantial evidence is concerning and should be worked through. I know I have very radical views on policing and the prison system, I don't think it works and I think we need to desperately invest in prison alternatives but I'd never put that expectation on a grieving family so when address the bigger issues the show is putting focus on you're not being dismissive or insensitive in my opinion. There is a place for empathy and then to also an analysis of what the show is saying about things on a societal level and greater systemic issues.
