Gintama - Ep. 98, 99, 100 Reaction

Now I kind of understand what some people mean when they say these jokes work better in the anime.. I haven't read the manga, but I can imagine setting up the same type of jokes the show has, doesn't have the same effect because of things you mentioned lol

Alright, lots of references so I won’t point out the overly obvious, like Mario, DBZ, etc unless it’s a big highlight. Episode 98: -The Twin Famicon was only released in Japan and was a Famicom/NES that could play games on floppy disks as well as NES cartridges -“Girl games” AKA “Dating simulators” are one of the most popular video game genres in Japan, and according to some (mostly conservative Japanese politicians) allegedly contribute to the country’s declining birthdate. -The game Katsura and Kondo compete in is a parody of “Tokimei Memorial” (literally translated: “Heartbeat Memorial”), a pioneer of dating sims, as it was one of the first to incorporate branching paths. The 1st came out in 1994 with the latest being a switch release in the near future. Episode 99: -The game Shinpachi and Yamazaki play is named as a parody of “Nobunaga’s Ambition,” although the gameplay is a parody of Tetris, as Nobunaga’s Ambition is actually a turn-based strategy game. -The RPG is a parody of Dragon Quest Episode 100: -First, I just want to highlight that the fake OP at the end of this episode copied the 2nd half of Japanese DBZ OP almost frame-for-frame, just with Gintaman characters -Many of the magazines Konishi mentions at the beginning of this episode are magazines of other, normal/non-manga magazines also published by Shueisha, Shonen Jump’s parent company, and the 2nd largest magazine conglomerate in Japan and possibly all of Asia. -With “Gintaman” being a parody of Gintama, it’s only fair that the editor “Konishi” is a parody of Gintama’s first IRL editor Oonishi Kouhei. He was eventually promoted to the coveted position of being One Piece’s editor, as well as deputy editor-in-Chief of Shueisha. He has also been a minor character in “Bakuman” a manga/anime about being a mangaka in Shonen Jump. -And so of course “Amachi” the gorilla mangaka is a parody of Hideki Sorachi, the mangaka of Gintama. -If we want to get super meta, this entire episode may be a rebuke of Weekly Shonen Jump readers who dislike Gintama and wish it were more like a typical “battle” Shonen series, the most famous of which is DBZ. -It also may be a jab at the fact that most modern “battle” Shonen series use DBZ as a template/example on which to build themselves. -Lastly, the episode does highlight genuine issues the Gintama manga has/had, and that Sorachi has acknowledged, like an obscene amount of text (To setup the jokes. Seriously its gags are much better suited for anime because it can feel like reading a novel in the manga), a protagonist with his identifying feature being his hair color (in a B/W manga), and Shinpachi’s straight-man routine being overbearing at times, among others.
