Infodump: Arc specific: -Ryokans are traditional Japanese Inns that typically feature tatami-matted rooms, communal baths, and other public areas where visitors may wear yukata and talk with the Okami, the chief service officer woman. I highly recommend staying at one at least a couple nights if you ever visit Japan. -The transformed appearance of the characters when possessed by 'Stands' is based on the appearance of a heavy-metal rock group by the name of 聖飢魔II Seikima-II. The inspiration is most likely to have come from the particular member, “Demon Kogure,” addressed as 'His Excellency' by fans. Said Heavy metal group possibly modeled themselves after the much more known American rock group, KISS. -JJBA references galore, with stands and Oiwa looking and acting like Dio. Episode 132: -Oda Nobunaga was a Japanese feudal lord and one of the leading figures of the Sengoku period (1400s to early 1600s). He started a war to unify all of Japan under his rule in the 1560s. By 1582, he was the most powerful warlord and de-facto ruler of Japan, but he met with an untimely death at the Honnoji-Temple incident. Which brings us to... -Akechi Mitsuhide was a general under Oda Nobunaga. Originally working well together, their relationship soured due to a policy bluder on Nobunaga’s ending in the murder of Mitsuhide’s mother and Nobunaga starting to become arrogant and think of Mitsuhide beneath him. In 1582, Mitsuhide ignored his orders from Nobunaga, and instead had his men move to surround Nobunaga at the Honnoji temple, where they then attacked and set fire to it. Nobunaga’s cause of death is unknown, but it was due to Mitsuhide, and he did take credit as Nobunaga’s killer. Mitsuhide was killed soon after by the bandit leader Nakamuta Chobei after fleeing a battle of revenge by Nobunaga’s more loyal subordinates. -Toyotomi Hideyoshi was the right hand man of Oda Nobunaga and succeeded him as leader of Nobunaga’s forces after the Honnoji incident. Completing what Nobunaga started, he was able to unify all of Japan by 1590, and even tried twice to conquer Korea as a foothold for hypothetical invasions into China (though both attempts were disasters). Many of the 1800s era Japan customs seen in Gintama were put in place by Hideyoshi. These include, but are not limited to: The restriction to the wearing of swords to Samurai only, the restorations of many temples and shrines, tea ceremonies, Feudal taxation, etc. Unlike the other 2 above, he died of old age. -Tokugawa Ieyasu was another general under Oda Nobunaga. After Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s death, he and Hideyoshi’s son went to war against each other over who would succeed him. At the Famous Battle of Sekigahara (1600 AD), with the help of the Oniwabanshu (Zenzo and Sacchan’s ancestors) he crushed the opposition and became the new ruler of Japan, setting in place the Tokugawa Shogunate, of which Gintama’s shogun is the heir to. Ironically, and as even stated in Gintama, Ieyasu was arguably the least renown, both in skill and by birth, when compared to all the others above. -Saint Francisco Xavier was a French Catholic missionary that introduced or reintroduced Christianity to SE Asia, India, and Japan in the early to mid 1500s. And yes his hair really was that way, at least as far as paintings show. Episode 133: -“Sen no Kaze ni Natte" or "Do not stand at my grave and weep" (the song Gin sings) is a song by Masafumi Akikawa. It was the #1 single in Japan in 2007. It was based on a poem of the English name by Mary Elizabeth Frye Episode 134: -Spoofs of the different 'Stands' possessing Gintoki: •one of the 'Stands' is 'Jimmy Heavenly', in the form of Shinpachi, which is a reference to Tommy Heavenly6, the singer of Gintama's 1st OP theme •Kinnikuman is also another 'Stand' that is referenced, in appearance as well as mentioned in name indirectly. Previously mentioned in the Hasegawa prosecution arc, he is the titular character of the manga of the same name, and its various spin-offs, the most well known being “Ultimate Muscle,” a sci-fi wrestling series. •Francis Xavier (see 132 notes). The reason he was able to take Oiwa out is probably because he was a Catholic priest, so exorcisms and last rites, etc
