Episode 250:
-The gang is celebrating Chinese New Year (now known as Lunar New Year or Zodiac New Year, since most nations outside China celebrate it in some form). The Lunar New Year begins on the 1st full moon of the year. Back in 1860s Japan (when Gintama is set), Japan followed a moon cycle calendar. Hence, Lunar New Year’s day was also the first day of the calendar year. It was not until the 1873 that Japan switched to the calendar system we use today.
-A tradition in Asian cultures on Lunar New Years is to give kids envelopes of money so that they can get a head start on financial fortunes for the year. Though mainly practiced in Asian countries, Asian Americans with deep ties to their cultural roots sometimes also practice it.
-Though not seen in this episode, the Envelopes are traditionally red with a gold accent. This started because the national color of China is red and gold is considered the color of good fortune (obviously).
