This is the blender HD version of my fur bucket hat. This mesh uses displacements to give the fur effect which mean you can make it as high poly or low poly as you want it to appear by adjusting the subdivision of the displacements.
Two Versions, one with a simple color change in the shader node, then another with fur like multi color that you can adjust also in the shader node.
If the fur is too high poly for your system, the subdivision can be brought down, just make sure the render number matches the Levels Viewport number
You can also adjust the fluff of the fur by adjusting the displace strength
