Added 2024-01-02 08:29:40 +0000 UTCOur favourite videos of 2023! You’re probably expecting a list of cool video essays from all the most goodest creators on youtube. But unfortunately we are weird and don’t really even know what’s happening in video essay youtube.
But we can sure as hell tell you about sewing youtube!
So here is a collection of stuff we liked this year, some video essays, some funny, some crafty. We contain multitudes and so does youtube!
Comedy
The Accidentally Pro-Gay Christian Film: Accidental Activist! by Caelan Conrad
A Straight Gay Teen by Matt Rogers - A timeless classic.
Tiktoker doing his "research" before posting a video by- The Slappable Jerk - A comedic short.
Two Hearts - Eurovision (Open Up) by Two Hearts - Eurovision parody song about New Zealand joining Eurovision
Sewing
Inspired by our video research into sustainability and ethics, and my utter hatred for the current fashion, this summer I (Ada) finally got a sewing machine and I learned how to sew from youtube! I’ve already made a lot of wearable pieces, including my last project of the year, these pyjamas I made Verity for Christmas/Dedek Mraz.

lies to unlearn about making your own wardrobe by Leena Norms - If you’ve ever been curious about sewing/knitting but thought it would be too complicated or expensive, this is the video for you!
clothes are so much worse now by Mina Le - Can you guess one of the reasons I got into sewing? :D In general, Mina Le is a great channel if you’re interested in pop culture fashion analysis. - Ada
I Made the Spider-Man Cat Backpack! by Rachel Maksey - Even if you’re not into sewing or DIY, Rachel is just a delight to watch!
The Ultimate Beginners Sewing Project - DIY Pyjama Shorts! by Rosary Apparel - This was the first thing I sewed! It comes with a free pattern and very clear instructions so if the sewing videos I’ve shared have tempted you into sewing, this is a good place to start. I made two pairs literally from an old bedsheet! - Ada
Brain
A.I. is B.S. by Adam Connover - Adam Ruins AI.
How Spotify Manufactures Gay Culture by Alexander Avila
The NGO-ization of resistance by Arundhati Roy - A speech that almost brought me to tears the first time I watched it because it contextualises so sharply a lot of feelings I have about the non-government / charity sector after a decade of a vague involvement with LGBT activism. It’s from 2004 but it’s now more relevant than ever, including in the light of the USA sponsored devastation of Palestine. - Ada
TikTok's Overconsumption Problem Is Worse Than Ever by ashley viola - I don’t have tiktok so I’m following its dystopian development at a safe distance through analysis videos :D - Ada
Are Film Critics a Dying Breed? by Broey Deschanel
Is AI Making Us Less Human? by Lily Alexandre - Wonderfully upsetting! 10/10!
Inside Love Is Blind’s Brutal Conditions on Set by More Perfect Union - Learning about the behind the scenes of reality TV for our video was sickening and it’s horrifying to learn how the Netflix shows are made but very encouraging to see that cast members are organising and pushing back!
The Awful Politics of Chris Chibnall's Doctor Who by orowen - Fun video about Chibnall’s Doctor Who being awful and pro-capitalism.
Why everything you buy is worse now by Vox
The White Gaze of Hairspray by Yhara Zayd - Fascinating background of Hairspray the movie/musical!
