New Culture Cruise Video for You! Designing Women go Looking for a Friend

Hi there friends! Thanks again so much for your support on Patreon!

I'm about to release a brand new Culture Cruise video, and as always, everyone pledging at the $4+ level gets early ad-free access. Here's your special link to the video:

Early Ad-Free Access: Designing Women Goes Looking for a Lesbian
When we think about gay characters on sitcoms, we usually picture people in big Northern cities. But season four of Designing Women features an unusual southern and conservative take on having queer friends. And it also set the stage for Ellen’s coming out episode, just a few years later.

And! I hope you'll join us for another Sewers of Paris livestream on Saturday, September 29, at 2pm PST featuring special guest Sonari Glinton! Sonari's a huge music buff, especially when it comes to showtunes and Sinatra and Americana, so we're going to have LOTS to talk about -- and it'll be a real learning opportunity for me. He's also deeply into Voltron so this will probably get real nerdy.

Because of your backing, I'm able to host these livestreams twice a month, and it's been so wonderful to chat with you about the books, movies, shows, and songs that you're obsessing over right now.

Thanks again for making all this queer content possible!

Matt

Thanks! And no I haven't seen One Day at a Time -- I'll have to check that one out. It's so funny that "VERY SPECIAL EPISODES" are still a thing, and yeah that's a great idea to compare today's vs those from past years. I've definitely been wanting to do a "coming out on TV" supercut for a long time so maybe this is the nudge I need!

Thanks Matt. Great video. I must get around to watching Designing Women — I’m ashamed to admit that I’ve never seen the show before 😳😬 I will fix that ASAP. Btw have you seen One Day at a Time (2017) on Netflix? My partner and I watched the series recently and we were reflecting on how they handled coming out and young gay characters and how we wished that this was what it was like on TV when we were young and came out. I especially liked how the the mum character reacted to the news (loving her child, trying to be supportive, but really struggling to process the information at the same time). I can imagine that my Mum would have gone through something very similar. It might be interesting to do a comparison of these “very special” episodes of sitcoms past and compare them to how present TV shows deal with the same story lines. Even how the family and the alters on United States of Tara “deal” with the young Marshall character coming out (as in, it’s not a big deal at all). Albeit while the mum Tara is loving and supportive to Marshall, her alter Buck is a little homophobic — possibly hinting that Tara is struggling with Marshall’s sexuality. Thanks again Matt. I look forward to the next video!
