Patreon-Exclusive Video! How anime & Nickelodeon changed cartoons in the 90s

Hello Patreon friends!

As I mentioned in my last video, I came across a ton of fascinating stories while researching my Rocko video that I just didn’t have room for in the final script, and I wanted to share them with you. Here's another bonus video for Patreon backers!

A few days ago, I showed you some of the eye-opening queer coding in golden-age animation from the 30s to the 60s, and now I want to show you what came next, and why Nickelodeon came along at just the right time to push the envelope.

I've got lots more stuff in the works for future videos: Early John Waters films, Disney villains, Buffy, Murder She Wrote, and more -- so keep your eyes out for more videos soon. And as always, keep sending me suggestions for stuff you want me to cover!!!

Thanks so much for supporting what I do. I hope you're having a great Pride month, followed by an even better Wrath month.

Matt

Haha glad the Biker Mice got you in!

I was introduced to this channel from a friend and picked this episode out as a favourite show as a kid. After seeing your flash clips of Biker Mice from Mars and other macho figures, I instantly joined to watch your extra content! What a great channel, keep up the great work, and I'm looking forward to watching your other content!

Thank you for talking about this. Revolutionary Girl Utena is my favorite show of all time, and it's beautifully queer.

One irony here: When Sailor Jupiter first met Sailor Uranus she thought she was male, and moreover, the cutest guy she'd ever seen. She spends most of the episode crushing over "him" until Sailor Moon tells her the truth.

I wish I had a better memory — I recall really enjoying Nickelodeon as a kid, but I think it was mostly game shows and anime then? (Pretty sure that’s where I saw Windaria and that Seven Cities of Gold anime). I missed a lot of their more innovative shows, apparently, because the only one you mentioned I was super familiar with was Rugrats.

Also, I love these videos so much. Two bonus videos in a row! It feels like... Pride!

BTW, something about the way you attach Vimeo vids doesn't work on Android - whenever I click them it takes me to a Vimeo "the embed code is invalid" error. I need to go to my desktop just to see them!

Yonatan Zunger

Oh yes absolutely! I can't wait to learn more about him.

If you're doing a video on gay disney villains do not forget to look into the life and work of animator Andreas Deja https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andreas_Deja
