Oh hi! Here's some more fun stories I found while researching my Mannequin video that I thought you would like, including an odd bridge from the 1930s to the 1980s. (And if the embedded video isn't working, use this link: https://youtu.be/FajRU5ug7y8 )
So: Almost a hundred years ago, Manhattan was in an UPROAR over Cynthia, a plaster mannequin that, for reasons nobody can fully explain, became a temporary celebrity. I guess this was sort of the 30s equivalent of memes? Anyway, Cynthia's celebrity has some odd parallels with the Mannequin film. But that's nothing compared to Sico.
I had never heard of Sico until a viewer contacted me to explain why there's a spaceship at the end of Mannequin on the Move -- apparently, there was a nightclub in Philly in the 80s that just had ... for no reason other than that it's cool ... a spaceship. With a robot. That would dance with you. That robot was named Sico, and it went on to appear in Rocky IV, on the show All my Children, and in a music video for Carly Simon. In the Rocky movie it's shown as a sort of romantic companion for a man; in the music video it's dating a woman. A bisexual icon!
Also in this video: A desperate plea! If you know where I can find episodes of the shows Snip or The Nancy Walker Show, please let me know. (I found the opening titles; but it's the actual shows I'm looking for.)
Thanks as always for being a part of my Patreon and making these videos possible! Keep your eyes peeled for a new one next Sunday, all about the one weird week in 1976 that somehow managed to be the gayest few days in television history, with an odd little connection to David Bowie, Laura Dern, and the invention of the VCR.
