Bonus video! Vampires on Broadway and The Shawl Mystery (TM) Solved

Thanks to everyone who sent me clips & pics & memories of queer Broadway stuff (just in time for the Tonys!) after the last bonus video -- I love it! Keep it coming! Here's some highlights of stuff I missed (and at least one thing I got wrong), along with a never-meant-to-air video of the All in the Family cast making fun of The Family Viewing Hour and Captain Picard getting weird.

If the video embed isn't working for you, try this link:

And here's some additional recommended viewing:

I'm working on a video next about the unlikely cooperation behind the scenes of the show Barney Miller -- and it's even more unlikely gay connection to Mork & Mindy and Happy Days. That oughta be out this coming Sunday.

Thanks again for all your support here on Patreon, and for all the wonderful fun stuff you send me!

Matt

The Ritz, not The Rink. The Ritz is a play starring Rita Moreno (who won a Tony). He's wrong about it being a musical though. Rita's character has a musical performance in the middle, but it's not a musical.

Bret Chisenhall

And you didn't even show the line from Archie where he sings "Robert can propose to Bill"...

Martijn Spruit

My favourite story from In Trousers has to be when Chip Zien (who played Marvin) thought that the song Whizzer Going Down was referring to Whizzer going to Florida, great video!

Matt thank you for this. I am a trained opera singer who did her share of semi pro stuff. But all my life I've been obsessed with the musical and opera scene of the 70s. I have this vision of how it was. I truly wish I could have been a student/new performer in that Era. So you just added too my collection of confirmation how awesome it was and the talent we love who started there.

Laura Estrada

I had a feeling you'd like it!

Oh geez I did not mean to insinuate any ~gossip~ about Steve, just that it's weird to see him playing a queer role and also of course that he's a star of the Village People movie Can't Stop the Music.

Thanks for more great content!

So thrilled to be a part of the circle! Your little corner is always a pleasure to gaze.

James Polk

I too have questions.

Kaeleigh Post

Ok, so I just spent 2 hours watching Dance of the Vampires... that was utterly terrible and amazing, all at the same time. Got some good chuckles out of it for sure.

Nini L

Right? I have questions.

Could you send me the link

I music directed and conducted "In Trousers" a long time ago in Washington DC. Written by William Finn ... it was the first part of his "Marvin Trilogy," which included "March of the Falsettos" and "Falsettoland." Finn and James Lapine then fused these shows into what became "Falsettos" which I also conducted 8 years ago at a NJ community theater.

Your Sal Mineo reference led me to this great interview with Mineo's partner Courtney Burr. Great Broadway gossip & descriptions of Hollywood's gay culture in the 60's/70's https://www.boyculture.com/boy_culture/2011/04/the-twinkie-defense-an-interview-with-courtney-burr.html

Wait, Steve Guttenberg? Complicated Sexuality? What?

Fred Maxon

OMG the shawl reveal! :)

Another great video as always! Quick correction: The 1984 original Broadway production of 'The Rink' starred Chita Rivera (along with Liza Minnelli and Jason Alexander), not Rita Moreno. Chita did win a Tony and a Drama Desk award for it though.
