Architect Vs Gardner

There are two major 'types' of writers. You have the Architects who carefully plan everything out from day one with detailed notes and outlines on one hand. On the other you have gardeners who plant the seeds of the story and see what develops.
Of course, most authors slip very frequently between the two. We also tend to favor one over the other.
Myself? I'm a gardner with architectural tendencies. I, for example, know the ending of Book 8 right now and am writing towards that. The flip side is that I don't know every step on the path that takes me there. I like to see how characters develop and how to improve upon them.
Sir Dalton originated as a simple foil to Jim, but my wife said that was boring so he got pushed towards being a very oblivious man who is also very steadfast and dependable. Some might say he has a bit of an ego as well. The final touch was adding in a host of daughters that he desperately wants to do right by.
I can't wait to bring him back.

I too like how Sir Dalton started, and found the development even more entertaining and impressive. I really think its a bit of both. You need to have the overall plan and plot structure. But what makes it relatable is the way that it twists and turns in unexpected ways as life often does. That often takes a basic story and makes it better or even great.
