We seem to be on the exact same page when it comes to the critiques of Family Guy in this episode and the commentaries. When I watched this as a teen and in my “Family Guy sucks” phase, I thought it was genius. But as I got older I thought the jabs at the Family Guy writers from the interviews and commentaries was a little petty. Especially when you consider that some classic Simpsons episodes also have a sketch-comedy inspired sensibility of jokes unrelated to the main story, so it’s not like this is strictly a Family Guy thing. So it’s hard for me to not think this episode feels like jealously at their younger, more successful rival, especially when they flat out admitted that that was part of their motivation. All that being said… the cut joke from Family Guy that they made as “revenge” against this episode (of Matt and Trey being a gay couple) is super lame and homophobic, I’m glad they cut it.
