The only place with "nub" or what you want to call is where they have gates. None of the walls has gates, except for nubs. Because of this, they have a gate to enter the nub, and then another gate to go further into the inner wall.

In my opinion.. comments like 'dont get attached to characters' and 'Eren is not the main character' are indirect spoilers that take away enjoyment of the show big time. The heartbreak and sorrow and joy and confusion and all the emotional stuff is why we all love this anime and what makes it enjoyable. So i also agree that stay away from comments even on patreon coz sometimes we just cant stop ourselves and might have good intentions but end up spoiling.

So to explain the Walls, The main wall in this episode is called Wall Rose but they have the "nubs"s and these nubs are called districts. So in this episode the district that gotten broken into is "Trost" which is part of Wall Rose. Hope that explains alil more better.

Oh, my fiancé does those type of paintings too! They're really cool for anime creations. They're also actually surprisingly technical because you have to paint it in reverse and you can't always see it until you're done unless you do it on a glass table as well. From my understanding so far ALL the cities are in the nubs, that way the population can easily escape if their space is attacked, with the main wall close by to serve as a buffer against further pursuit. My guess is farming and such, or small villages, exist in the in betweens (the two who mentioned being in a mountain village near where the Titans broke through last time.)
