I think a lot of find the Reiner family dinner conversation not an example of Reiner losing it, but rather than describing a bunch of "island devils" he described *very mundane and normal* situations and humanized those "devils" by barely coming up with anything negative to say about them and even saying "all kinds of people" rather than idk, some racist propagandist stuff. He spent a whole schpeel talking about yasha's eating habits, and a courageous (foolish?) eren who inspires bullheadedness in others. In his mind the darkest stuff he could come up with was just normal good qualities that we all like about the characters, almost complimenting them which in the eyes of a country that have thrived off of the idea their brothers and sisters on the island over are traitorous devils, is borderline unbelievable. Gabi even went "...what do you mean all kinds of people". Instead of coming back with a war story about monsters he just told a short story about characteristics that anyone of them back at home could have.

So, something that you two may or may not have missed, and regarding the comment of the right and wrong of someone growing up racist because of their environment pushes that on them. What happens when someone spends 5 years amongst the same people they're racist towards? The worst thing Reiner could think to say about his time on Paradis were some mundane comments on a few of their personality quirks. The worst thing he could think to say about his time with the "island devils" is that Sasha is dumb, hungry, and shares less than half of a potato. He even accidentally called them people and his racist brainwashed family didn't seem to like that and even push him away because of it, however, they hadn't spent any time with them the way Reiner had

The history that we learned in season 3, that Marley teaches, where Eldians are evil and that their King abandoned them, is mostly accurate. The Eldian Empire, in the past, did use the power of the 9 and Pure Titans to subjugate the world for hundreds of years. The King was ashamed of his ancestors and how they treated the rest of the world and wanted the wars to end so he left with a group of Eldians and built the walls and made a false threat to release the colossal titans in the walls if anyone came to attack his people. The threat was an empty one because we know of the Kings will revokes war in the founding titan if its power is held by a royal. We know this to be true and not just Marleyan propaganda because the rest of the world hates the Eldian race just as much as Marley does and it lines up with everything the Reiss family disclosed. The Marleyans are in power now because of undisclosed history but we know they stole the power of 7 of the 9 titans during the time before the King left to Paradis Island. Just another perspective to throw your brains for a loop. Like you guys have said and are very understanding of, in this series there is no side thats right.

So yes, I can be frustrated watching Reiner's mom but I can't blame her at all. Only when people like Reiner experienced the other side will they realize that what they believed is wrong or partial. But many Eldians like Reiner's mom do not have the chance to experience.

@Rice & Ginger Well I think the show has made it clear that the Marleyans are authoritarian, similar to the ones that have happened in real life history. One big characteristic of authoritarians is total information control over the population through propoganda, executions, and censorship. From what we've seen, this is how the Marleyans operate as well.

But at the end of S3 the owl says that the King was never actually going to go through with it, so much so that he even vowed to renounce war, making all royal bloods unable to use the power. And before he closed the gates he said “If Eldia were to ever be drawn to sin again, we will accept our fate as it is ment to be”. The fact the the King felt so guilty about what his people did that he left the Great Titan War and did all of this pretty much confirms that at least a majority of what Marley is saying is Historically correct. Marley WAS the victim at first and the king DID abandon the remaining eldians on the continent. That part much is true

In these 2 episodes Anytime an eldian speaks out of line Marley soldiers are reminding them that they are titan scum. We already made the Jewish connections and the North Korean ones are very similar where they have people un able to leave unless they are going to serve "THE MOTHERLAND" in hopes to escape and have some methods of freedom. Nothing to do with the history of titans just that these people are made to serve in the military in hopes for a better life. But thats similar to if there was a book or movie told from the perspective of a Nazi. Would you then consider them to be in the right? Probably not. Bc what they are doing is terrible. The other thing is this. I have no idea if the history that we have learned about the titans is even true! All we know is what has been told to us from the Marleyans! Some extra info on eldian armbands :  Red is for titan shifters.  Yellow are kandidates that have a chance in becoming the next shifter when they proved themself.  Grey are eldians normal soldiers.  The families get the same colour as their daughter/son so they will get little more respected by marlyns and also as a kind of warning not to mess with these people since they have a powerfull son/daughter.

To answer your question without spoiler: All will be explained later on in the season, but as we've seen so far they were turned due to Zeke's scream, like when Eren scream to control those titans to attack Reiner. Also at the dinner table Reiner was talking about Sasha "The potato girl" and his squad at Paradis Island if you didn't catch that. Also you missed a guy jumping off the roof right after dinner scene, it's not important but you totally missed it.

I really enjoy the discussion that Michelle and Ron had at the end. I just wanna add another factor as to maybe why eldians or the titan shifters won't fight back against the marleyans for freedom if they have titan abilities. This is just my opinion but i think it's not just the marleyans who sees eldians as demons, it's the whole world. It's just that the marleyans are "nice" enough to keep them alive and have them serve for their country. And because of the brainwashing, they can't really team up with the paradis people since they 100% believe that they're devils who couldn't atone for their ancestors' sins. So it's like they really have no other place to belong in the world except marley. I might be wrong on this but that's just how I interpret what it's like living in their shoes. Feel free to correct me :))

Just some clarification on some of Reiner's scene: 1. The train scene discussion with Falco. Reiner is trying to protect Falco by saying that he could be sent to paradise with his family for saying such a thing. He doesn't want the wrong people to hear that from him. 2. The dinner table. He is describing just normal people and yes letting know his family that the worst thing those "island demons" are doing are just normal humans thing 3. The scene with all the shifter he was praising the Marley Military coz he undersood by Zeke's words that they were being listened. Thats why when galliard was complaining he directly stopped him and said "anything to help marley" and all. I think despite the obvious PTSD he is suffering he is very much aware of the situation

The reason this is a masterpiece is because of the flawless transition of seemingly being a regular anime, turns out to be the most philosophical. It really engages the Viewer to Challenge/Question Their innate Bias. The "Marley Empire" can easily be change into any other Imperialistic nation. To answer your question Ron, the reason why Colt is in the room with the titan shifters is because he’s already been selected as the warrior candidate that will inherit the Beast Titan since Zeke only has 1 year left. Gabi, Falco, Udo and Zofia are still competing to be selected as inheritors of the Armoured Titan. I think they’re not included in the meeting because of that and also because Reiner still has 3-4 years left.

The brainwashing is so deep rooted out of fear for their and their families safety. Anybody that they catch going against their ideology gets injected and shoved off a wall, which is what Grisha’s dad was so worried would happen to them. I imagine that’s why they keep them all in a camp, if any of the warriors act out of line, they have easy access to the family members to punish them for the warrior’s behavior. Marley totally has them in their clutches and the Eldian’s are at their “mercy”.

Just 3 details that I wanna point out in case you haven't noticed: 1. You have seen how the Marleyans are constantly spying/eavesdropping the shifters. When Colt was asking Zeke on the balcony about his "secrets" (i.e. royal blood etc.), Zeke knowingly said the secret could be his ass wiping technique (lol) - then General Magath appeared immediately from the sheets. 2. Some tidbits on the PTSD situation. The night when Reiner was blabbering about his Paradis encounters at the dinner table, there's a few-second shot afterwards where a lightning struck and someone jumped off the roof at the nearby hospice. The next morning Reiner walked past a commotion at the spot where the man killed himself. 3. Michelle noticed the looming figure overlooking Reiner and the kids. (Deleted the next following sentence as fellow sushi squad feels its TMI) :) Little details :)

Don't worry, any lingering questions you have will all be explained or even clarified more! Also, the animation and art style may look different compared to the last 3 seasons is because it's a new studio taking over at this point. S1-3 was under WIT studio but now MAPPA is handling things. You may know some of their work from Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man. The art style of the characters from here on out is also more closer to the manga's.

loved this episode! also, the way reiner was describing sasha and the others back in paradise, he actually subconsciously made them sound humane and normal which contradicted what his family had been brainwashed into believing - hence their horrified faces. they were terrified of the possibility of reiner having been influenced into seeing the “bad” eldians as normal human beings.
