2023-02-25 21:38:50 +0000 UTCYes, you are correct Michelle! KFC is THE Christmas dinner for most of Japan; you have to book your reservations sometimes weeks or months in advance. The commercials start popping up in October or first week of November. About this episode's release, it was nowhere near Christmas, not even in Japan. And that's for the manga chapter too. The volume was released in December though. It's like Michelle said, a transitional episode, no filler.

Like season 1 started in Spring, season 3 was summer camp and they have now reached christmas time in the story. And the purpose is to have some time to show the characters bonding and having fun, not knowing what tragedy awaits them in the near future as the narrator implies. Calm before the storm in a sense. I appreciate these kind of bonding episodes instead of just going from a battle of life and death to another

It actually is supposed to be the arc that takes place after the Joint Training, but instead they switched the order around for the anime. So the stuff that goes from episode 13 to 19 happens after episodes 20 to 24.
