I feel they did demonstrate kageyamas admiration for oikawa when he turned up at the practice match. Both with an introduction by kageyama and just by the softer expression on his face as he talked about him.

It makes him much more relatable in so many ways--his drive to succeed, his frustration at being unable to overcome a seemingly insurmountable wall (i.e. Shiratorizawa, the champion school in their prefecture), and his vendetta/rivalry against Kageyama, who he recognizes deep down as a prodigy that once threatened to unseat him (and actually did when he was subbed out in Jr. High). He's a bubbly character on the surface but deep down he's far more complex and nuanced than most of his peers given him credit for. The only one who seems to understand him best is his friend Iwaizumi (Aoba Johsai's ace spiker), who serves as Oikawa's anchor & consistently keeps him grounded and focused (even though he beats the crap out of him at times to do so.)

2023-03-02 19:18:08 +0000 UTCI know I'm late and I don't know if you already know this, but even though Oikawa and Kageyama was on the same team back in junior high, I think they didn't really played together on games back then. I think after Oikawa graduated was the only time Kageyama was able to play as the team's setter and that's also when Kageyama's attitude changed because he wants to win by his own terms.

He's seriously good."

He is one of my favorite anime characters because his personality is so complex and contradictory like we would expect someone who is cooky to not work hard and think they are above everyone but Oikawa is someone who works super hard and knows his flaws and realizes that there are people better than him
