But in Hinata's defense, in a real battle you can't always just give up "to fight another day" if the villain is about to go destroy a village for example and you're the only one standing in their way

I've been looking forward to your reaction to the next fight for weeks. And I said it in another comment but I'd like to reiterate that even if Hinata had kicked his a** in front of everyone it wouldn't have hurt Neji as much as what she said at the end.
