Orichimaru had to slice open the belly or the reaper to release his hands as well as the souls of the previous hokage because they all were taken by the reaper death seal. That's why he couldn't cast jutsu prior and why Kabuto had no means of bringing back the hokage back. I don't think Kabuto knew how to undo the reaper death seal.

Every prior Hokage was stored inside of the reaper; - Hiruzen sealed the 1st, 2nd & Orochimaru' arms all in the same fight, which also seals himself in the reaper. - Minato sealed Kurama within himself using the reaper which then caused the reaper to seal Minato within. This is just a basic summary of their accomplishments and what they are known for. 1st Hokage - Hashirama Senju Also known as the God of Shinobi. He created the Leaf village and was its first hokage. He is the original user of the Wood Style Ninjutsu and the only Shinobi known to have defeated Madara Uchiha. Granddad of Tsunade, and his wife, Mito Uzumaki is the first person known to have been the jinchuriki of the 9 Tails. 2nd Hokage - Tobirama Senju Little brother of Hashirama and the second to become Hokage of the leaf village. [Redacted] and had them be the Police force of the leaf as a means to keep them on the outskirts of the village away from any critical decisions being made that affects the village. Naruto's [Shadow Clone Jutsu] was his creation that he passed on to Naruto indirectly through [the scroll he stole]. Minato's Flying Raijin is also his jutsu as well as the Reanimation Jutsu. Just to name a few.

I think you mean Rain village, but they explained jiraiya's situation because the water pressure is too much to reach his corpse, but that does not explain why he couldn't get blood from when pain stabbed him. Also for shisui, you're reanimated at the time you die unless you experiment like he did with Madara, so it would be no point in bringing back someone with no eyes.

Hinata sacrificing herself in the Pain arc should have been more than enough but Kishimoto had Naruto not even awknowledge Hinata after that and had him running and proposing to Sasuke. Now he wants to Kill Neji to make them closer? Then it took a stupid genjutsu in the movie for Naruto to even understand that Hinata loves him? See this is why Naruto could die and we keep Neji alive and rename the show Neji.

Remember Rochi brought back the 1st and 2nd Hokage during the fight with Sarutobi but Sarutobi used the death seal to seal the 2 hokage so they can never be reanimated again, so yes this was to allow him to bring back all these sealed hokage who couldn't be reanimated until now. Rochi just used the death god mask to be able to do this jutsu to unseal them.

*Not spoiler* Good question Ron. It's been a long time question for viewers. Edo tensei requires you to have the corpse ( to get their blood or dna) to bring them back. That's why Kabuto didn't bring back certain characters. For example, Jiraiya is at the bottom of the sea inside the hidden mist village. It's hard to explain because you'd think you just go to the sea and grab the corpse but it's supposedly no possible. Then you have Kishimoto saying it ruins the story of Jiraiya if you reanimate him. I always wished they revived Shisui, but apparently that's an unretrievable corpse. Maybe the corpse has disintegrated but it's also under the "unretrievable" category. Very possible it's bad writing that caused this dilemma.

In the fight between the 3rd Hokage and Orochimaru, the 3rd used the reaper death seal to seal away the 1st, the 2nd Hokage and Orochimaru. Like you already know, he couldnt seal Orochimaru completely but his hands. The 4th Hokage sealed him self and half of the ninetails, also with the reaper death seal. So the 4 souls, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Hokage (and Orochimarus hands) are inside the reaper death seal and couldnt be reanimated normally.

It's really impressive honestly rewatching. Minus a couple spots here and there, I think it really hits peak as soon as Hidan shows up. Shikimaru ship, Sasuke ship, jiraiya ship, Naruto ship Sasuke ship, then the "worst parts" are the sakura ship, killer bee ship, and early war, right back into peak. And Boruto has peak moments, nobody lie!

And we're not allowed to jump in and save them from the writing. I love this story, but that is a flaw. To give him credit, he apparently wanted deaths like Choji, but was forced to change it from the studio.

To repeat others, Hashirama, Tobirama, Sarutobi, Minato were all trapped inside the REAPER DEATH SEAL. Minato sealed himself to kill Kurama, and Sarutobi sealed himself to kill Orochimaru's arms (that's how strong Orochi is) Sarutobi sealed the other hokage as well. And yes Hashirama (1st) is strong AF, so it's safe to assume they weren't at full strength back in OG.

The symbolism for Neji is so dope. Resemblance of the bird being free from the cage as the seal went away on his forehead accepting his fate, Neji finally understanding the freedom his father felt choosing to die in order to protect his comrades, which explains the bird embodying Neji when he jumped front of the spikes to protect Naruto. I really wish that we would have seen Neji and Lee have a real fight especially since we always seen Neji one shot Lee in flashbacks. Remember when you guys wondered why Kabuto wouldn't bring back the previous Kage back then (edit : and at the end of this reaction haha)? That was because they were sealed, and Kabuto explained that he couldn't bring back sealed people. All of them were sealed by that same "Reaper Death Seal" at some point in the story - First the 4th Hokage when he sacrificed himself sealing half of Nine tails chakra with himself - Then the 3rd Hokage, when he sacrificed himself sealing Orochimaru's arms and both the 1st and 2nd Hokage that were reanimated by Orochimaru during the same fight. Orochimaru investigated on his own on that secrect Uzumaki clan sealing jutsu just to get his arms back, and it happened to be that same jutsu that sealed all 4 previous Kage

The reason kabuto couldn’t, think back, they all were sealed into the reaper. Minato sealed himself and half the 9tails, 3rd sealed himself along with the 1st and 2nd in the fight with orochimaru. Orochimaru was the only one with all the info needed to reanimate them all.

Kabuto couldn’t get to the Hokages before because up until they started the war going after the death reaper mask might as well have been the same as starting the war. But Kabuto didn’t plan for things to work out perfectly being slightly overconfident in the plan going perfectly!

You're not completely wrong, but the issue he had with summoning the 4th is that his soul was sealed so he couldn't do it. HIs soul was already sealed in the reaper when he used it during Kurama's attack. The other three were sealed in that fight though.

Kabuto couldn't bring back those 4 of the hokages b/c their souls were sealed inside the death god. 4th died sealing the 9 tails and got his soul sealed. 3rd died sealing 1st & 2nd and got his own soul sealed. So no soul no reincarnation. OM went and did the unsealing so now all 4 are back.

@Rice&Ginger Kabuto couldn't bring them back with reanimation because their souls were sealed within the Reaper Death Seal, hence why Orochimaru had to let himself be possessed by the Reaper and then cut open it's belly which breaks the seal in order for their souls to be released.

Someone else probably explained but the reason Kabuto couldn’t reanimate the 4 past Hokages is because they were sealed by the Reaper Death Seal. During the Third Hokage vs Orochimaru fight, Hiruzen sealed away the spirits of Hashirama and Tobirama along with Orochimarus arms. In doing so, he also sealed away his own spirit since he used the technique (any use of the Reaper Death seal, seals away the user). Minato also got sealed away by RDS when sealing away half of Kurama and then using the Tatragram seal (I believe) to seal the other half into Naruto. Thus, Hokages 1-4 were sealed away and inaccessible. This also goes for any shinobi whose DNA is unobtainable or Kabuto simply could not find

Kabuto couldnt reanimate the previous hokage because they all had their souls sealed by the reaper death seal. - 3rd hokage sacrifices in own soul to seal the first two hokages and orochimaru's arm. - Minato seals the nine tails in Naruto - the caster of the jutsu also has their soul consumed by the shinigami Its why Orochimaru had to go out of his way to release the souls first in this episode before they could be reanimated. Mask of Death is an item used by Uzumaki, they are specialize in Sealing Jutsu. Remember the 4th Hokage used this method to seal Ninetails inside Naruto in exchange of his soul too. But Minato doesn't need the mask since he knows the hand signs to perform it. Fast forward, 3rd Hokage sealed the 1st & 2nd Hokage using that including the Arms (Jutsu of Orochimaru). Meaning to say, they are all stored in one place.

The mask and operation that just occurred was then being unsealed which nobody alive knew of besides for the snake goat himself. Lord 1st and Lord 2nd was sealed by Lord 3rd shortly before he sealed himself and the arms. Lord 4th sealed himself during the Nine Tails attack.
